ANI discussion

[edit]

Hello. Can you please look into the discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#~2025-31252-28? There seems to be an issue with a temporary account's unsourced additions. sjones23 (talk - contributions) 02:34, 1 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Let me know if it comes up again and I'm happy to block next time. Sergecross73 msg me 19:58, 1 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question regarding sources

[edit]

Wouldn't it be better to go with what the majority of the sources say? Most sources don't tend to combine Mario Kart 8 original version sales with Deluxe version or Pokémon Red and Blue with Yellow. While such sources that combine them do exist but they are not in the majority. So, in that case, should we use WP:UCS and arrange them in the way that makes sense, or would doing that risk the policy of original research? As of now, the article of the list of best-selling video games is using that sort of methodology of what to combine and exclude in the total sales, which I guess falls into original research. Kazama16 (talk) 14:23, 1 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

With Mario Kart, I think its mostly because most sources are reporting on the sales that Nintendo reports, and most of the time Nintendo reports by platform. And since there's been little change in Wii U sales in the last decade, they just report on the Switch version's sales. Personally, I think it'll be rectified eventually - it's combined figures are close to overcoming Wii Sports as their best selling game, and I'm guessing that'll be reported on heavily. I personally don't see an issue with combining, as its pretty widely reported as a simple Wii U port with some new tracks/racers. It's still more or less the same core game. That's why any efforts to split the base 8 and Deluxe versions into separate articles has failed.
I'm less familiar with the Pokémon R/B/Y situation - I would have thought their sales would be been regularly combined - but my understanding is that its pretty similar to the Mario Kart situation above, in being a very minimally changed version.
Personally, I'm not opposed to grouping the ones that are generally considered largely the same. It just gets messier when people try to combine differing situations and incompatible metrics - combining single games to compilation releases, combining full-game sales to free mobile game downloads, etc. I'm also not entirely sure how we should handle vastly different versions of games - for example, Persona 3 and Persona 3 Reload - but fortunately it's nowhere near any of these sorts of charts. Off the main topic, but I feel the article about Nintendo's best-selling games is not getting as much attention as I want it to be getting. A minimum of over 100 views per day is not what I would expect, considering how popular Nintendo is. Many other Nintendo lists get like 10 times more views than this. Even after searching up Google, I don't get the result of this article, meaning so many people aren't aware of this article. As a result, I'm considering it to be merged with Nintendo's standalone article, by including a separate section called "Best-sellers" or "Financial information", much like how the Capcom article is doing with its "Game sales" section. By doing this, it will surely catch people's attention more. Do you agree with this decision? Kazama16 (talk) 07:25, 7 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I don't think view counts are really a criteria for whether or not something deserves to have an article. There's lots of notable topics whose articles don't get all that much attention. It happens when you have literally millions of them. I wouldn't worry about the Google hits. As long as the list meets WP:LISTN, it's fine to keep in my opinion and it could be improved.
That being said, it is definitely true that the list being more visible and getting more attention would drive more editors to improve it, which would of course be to its benefit. I have one thought on how that could be remedied. I noticed that the list doesn't have all that many incoming links leading to it. You could go and find articles for video games that might be notable for being one of Nintendo's best-selling games, and link it from there.
As an example, I just now went and added such a link to the lede of Wii Sports in this edit. If you wanted to go and add other such incoming links, it would almost certainly increase the visibility of the list. silviaASH (inquire within) 09:15, 7 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

So, some thoughts on this:

  • I too watch page views on the article's I create. One thing I've noticed is that page view funnel down smaller as pages get more specific in their scope. For example, without fail, a band's page gets the most views, the album less views, the songs less than the albums, etc. That appears to be the way it goes. So, it strikes me as natural that something more narrow in scope like this article gets less views.
  • There will be reason where page views will fluctuate. I imagine they'll shoot up whenever Nintendo releases quarterly sales figures, or, as I mentioned earlier, if/when Mario Kart 8 becomes their best-selling games. Sometimes, it just takes time for people to "notice" an article exists too, and views go up.
  • On one hand, yes, the Nintendo main page gets far more views. But at the same time, with a page that size, there's more a likelihood that people aren't seeing it too. There's no way to tell who scrolling all the way down the page to actually read the content you wrote.
  • What Silvia says is true too, it may help to find (natural) ways to link to it in other articles. I emphasize natural because if people force it into article excessively you may get pushback.

All in all, you're free to merge it into the Nintendo article, but keep in mind, that's a very high profile, high view article. There may be editors who oppose its inclusion there, or have varying thoughts on how to (vastly) alter its presentation. You may "lose control" of much of the content there. Revoke rights

[edit]

Hi @Sergecross73. I'm taking a break from the project. Please remove my NPR and TAIV rights. Thank you! 11WB (talk) 22:58, 4 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. I hope everything is okay with you. I'm sorry to see you go, it seemed like you were doing well on Wikipedia. Are you sure you don't want to keep the rights in case you change your mind and decide you want to stick around? Think about it. Sergecross73 msg me 03:17, 5 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've been having some problems that affect how I communicate with others. I thought the best thing to do was to pause my activity entirely so I can reflect and work on that. Removing the permissions would not affect that either way, I didn't really properly think that part through. I'll continue to contribute for the time being, but in a way that doesn't involve as much communication with others. 11WB (talk) 09:25, 5 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I sent a ping that provides some more context. I'll stick with participating using the permissions for the time being and will make the effort to improve how I communicate with other editors. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to think this through properly. 🙏 11WB (talk) 13:21, 5 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Thanks for the context. You do good work here. Don't let things stress you out too much. The mistakes you make are often minor and clearly not in bad faith, so I think you're just a little too hard on yourself some times. Sergecross73 msg me 14:03, 5 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Technical news

  • Starting on November 4, the IP addresses of logged-out editors are no longer being publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account associated with their edits.
  • Administrators will now find that Special:MergeHistory is now significantly more flexible about what it can merge. It can now merge sections taken from the middle of the history of the source (rather than only the start) and insert revisions anywhere in the history of the destination page (rather than only the start).
