Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal), broadly construed, including but not limited to history, politics, ethnicity, and social groups, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia's norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Additionally, you must be logged in, have 500 edits, and have an account age of 30 days in order to make edits related to two subtopics: (1) Indian military history, or (2) social groups, explicitly including caste associations and political parties related to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template. — Newslinger talk 20:08, 20 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Newslinger: This editor is still not understanding that he is not allowed to edit Indian caste and military topics without becoming an ECP editor.[1] Chronos.Zx (talk) 13:26, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Longewal, due to current restrictions in the South Asia contentious topic, please keep in mind that you are not allowed to make edits related to "Indian military history" or "social groups, explicitly including caste associations and political parties related to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal" until your account is extended confirmed, with the exception of submitting appropriate edit requests on article talk pages. Your account will automatically be extended confirmed after you have made 500 edits and have been a registered user for at least 30 days; your account history shows that as of right now, you have made 5 edits and your account age is 21 days. Please see Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Procedures § Extended confirmed restriction (WP:ECR) for more information on this restriction, which affects all Wikipedia pages.
Your recent edit to the Sati (practice) article at Special:Diff/1312909826 included claims regarding "Rajput clans", which is not allowed because one of the extended confirmed restrictions in the South Asia contentious topic covers "caste associations". However, you are allowed to propose your edit as an edit request on the article's corresponding talk page, Talk:Sati (practice). — Newslinger talk 15:13, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies. I had no idea this was prohibited. I see the edit was reverted and rightly so. Longewal (talk) 01:51, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm ScrabbleTiles. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, but you didn't provide a reliable source. On Wikipedia, it's important that article content be verifiable. If you'd like to resubmit your change with a citation, your edit is archived in the page history. If you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. ScrabbleTiles (talk) 09:00, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

As per MOS, I added a summary of the controversy section in a NPOV manner. I didn't add citations because I don't think citations are mandated for ledes. Longewal (talk) 09:05, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
