National varieties of English

Information icon Hello. In a recent edit to the page Jews, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, or Pakistan, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the first author of the article used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Please additionally refrain from changing the spelling of quoted material away from the format used in the direct quote, as you did in changing Judean to Judaean. The article is tagged with Oxford spelling, and Judaean is not a direct quotation. Even if it were that would not justify reverting the entirety of my edit. Did you even bother to read my edit description? Keeper of Albion (talk) 20:53, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It is in fact a direct quotation in multiple places -- both from the Daniel Schwartz quotation and in addition, you changed the referenced name of this published work in the citation as well away from its actual spelling; further the "Oxford spelling" tag was added without consensus by a banned editor recently. As such I've removed it, pending consensus for it's inclusion. In all other non-quotation or non-footnote uses throughout the article, "Judean" is used, not "Judaean." Per MOS:RETAIN, An article should not be edited or renamed simply to switch from one variety of English to another. That is definitionally what you did. (Some possibly helpful backstory -- the Oxford tag was added in January of this year by now-banned user Marginataen, with no prior discussion. This was part of a string of undiscussed ENGVAR and date format changes from Marginataen that resulted in their community ban; it appears that in the cleanup of that, the tag was never removed from the Jews article. So it's understandable that you'd want to copyedit based on the tag if unaware of the history that it was never supposed to be there in the first place; though my points about making changes to referenced or quoted (even single-word quotes are still quotations) material remain. Regardless, if you want to propose a change to Oxford-style English, I'd suggest making a RFC for that on Talk:Jews in order to build a consensus first.
