Manimekalai (1959 film)
[edit]Recently I added the ragas of two songs in this film. You have removed it saying "unsourced". The songs are available on YouTube and anyone who knows Carnatic music can detect the raga. Ragas were mentioned in the song books of 1930s and 40s. But this is a 1959 film and the ragas are not mentioned in the song books. This raga Malkauns is a Hindustani raga which is equivalent to the Carnatic raga Hindolam. G. Ramanathan did not use Hindolam at all in his compositions. But this is the only song he composed in the equivalent Malkauns raga. The song was sung by P Bhanumathi. She was the MD of the film Ippadiyum oru penn that was released in 1975. In that film she sings a song in this same raga (tune). You have removed that also. I do not edit or write nowadays but because of this special occurance I thought it should go on record. But nowadays majority of people do not know Carnatic music let alone its nuances. Technically you are right - yes, there is no source. Therefore I leave it at that.
