Needed 2 name categories
[edit]We currently have Category:Dramatists and playwrights also Category:Theatre managers and producers. There are other examples of dual named categories. I think we should rename Category:Milliners to Category:Hatters and milliners. At least until the mid-20th century Hattwrs sold men's hats, while milliners sold women's hats. They were distinct occupations with distinct products. I think we should have one Category because there is not really enough for two. I think we should also merge Category:Rebels and Category:Revolutionaries into a Category:Rebels and revolutionaries that would cover both. Essentially both are people who violently oppose the existing government. The theory is that rebels just want to change the current leader while revolutionaries want a systemic change. However there are also groups who want to end outside rule and create local rule. It is not always clear exactly which goal is being sought. So I think one Category that covers all people who violently oppose the government in power is the most logical way forward.John Pack Lambert (talk) 18:43, 31 August 2025 (UTC)
- We also have Category:Irish scholars and academics and many other similar categories for scholars and academics. We also have dome categories that are obstetricians and gynecologists.John Pack Lambert (talk) 22:11, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
Category:People from Nkore
[edit]Please add sort keys and multiple parents when you make tiny categories like this.SMasonGarrison 12:59, 2 September 2025 (UTC)

Please don't remove diffusing tags
[edit]Please don't remove diffusing tags from Immigrants to FOO categories, especially if you are not going to include an edit summary. [1] SMasonGarrison 12:30, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
- These diffusing tags are encouraging people to create 1 article categories. I do not think they are needed.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:37, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
- For example we had a diffuse category of Category:Immigrants to Belize which has 4 sub-cats, 3 with 1 article. It is so small overall it probably does not need sub-cats at all.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:58, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
- It says should be moved to subcategories where applicable. It doesn't say create new categories. Although I can see how that inference could be drawn. The one you removed was from the United Kingdom. Which would benefit from diffusing. What language would you propose for a tag that wouldn't lead someone to make an underpopulated category? SMasonGarrison 21:23, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
- When you are in the middle of a conversation about a subject, I strongly encourage you to not make changes. Instead how about you populate these subcategories? There are tons of people in Category:Immigrants to the United States who could be diffused SMasonGarrison 21:31, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
- I do not think so. Most of these people were involved in multi national migration. It is a complex mess. Putting them in specific categories is not justified. They moved from the Soviet Union to Germany. Then from Germany to the US. Or other 2 or more part migrations. It is not clear if they were a Soviet or a German emigrant. It just makes more sense to categorize them by each step. The number of countries where the total number of immigrants we have to that country is under 10 is quite high. Right now we have well over 1000 immigration categories with only 1 article. Several are misnamed. For example the Kingdom of Dahomey, a pre-colonial state, is a distinct entity from colonial and post colonial policies in similar territory. So the 1 article in Emigrants from Brazil to Benin really does not belong in that category at all, but in Emigrabts to the Kingdom of Dahomey. Trying to create every emigration Category for which we have at least 1 article does not make sense.John Pack Lambert (talk) 05:03, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
- You literally restored this unjustified diffusion call on the Immigrants to Nauru Category. A Category with 2 total articles. Why? There is no navigational value here. There is no reason to encourage a 2 article category be diffused.John Pack Lambert (talk) 05:15, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
- Nauru was a misclick, because your point is a reasonable one for smaller categories. But for the larger ones? Instead how about you populate those existing subcategories? SMasonGarrison 16:25, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
- The vast majority of sub-categories are not populatable. There just are not many notable people who emigrated from the Marshall Islands, Chad, Mali, and many other countries. Huge numbers of these categories have no reasonable expansion beyond 1 article.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:26, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not talking about the smaller ones. I literally say the "larger ones" SMasonGarrison 22:51, 6 September 2025 (UTC)

We should require all articles to go through the Article for creation process
[edit]We need to require all articles to go through the articles for creation process. The current rules allow too many low quality and useless articles that inform no one or otherwise hinder navigation to exist.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:13, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
please add all the relevant categories when you create categories. otherwise other people can't find themSMasonGarrison 12:55, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
- The Kingdom of Prussia replaces Brandenburg-Prussia. It makes no sense to say people from one are from the other. We might as well say that People from the Tsardom of Russia are from the Russian Empire. Brandenburg is a state in Germany created after World War II. Saying people from the 17th-century are from there is just plain an anachronism.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:03, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
- That's not my point. You didn't even add it to Category:Brandenburg-Prussia. Please add more than a single parent category when you make categories. And please use sort keys. SMasonGarrison 13:06, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
- I've reverted your category removals because no one will be able to find these categories if you don't connect them to the modern day location. SMasonGarrison 13:08, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Johnpacklambert Please understand that your refusal to add relevant parent categories makes it harder to find the categories. If you want people to use these categories, then you need to make them findable to other people. That means adding parents and sort keys. Please try to make less work for other people. SMasonGarrison 13:12, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
- I am not "refusing to add relevant categories". I try to find as many relevant categories as possible. However the Kingdom of Prussia is no more a parent to Brandenburg-Prussia than the Tsardom of Russia is a parent to the Russian Empire.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:16, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
- Can you please step up your efforts? Because Category:Brandenburg-Prussia should have been an obvious addition, as would sort keys... SMasonGarrison 13:28, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
- I will try to do better in finding more parents and adding sort keys.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:30, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
