Translation of 'odden' in Tollerodden

Hi there,

Do you think that 'headland' might be a more accurate English word for the Norwegian 'odden'? And if so, is it appropriate to apply that translation everywhere in the article?

From my own uneducated reading, 'peninsula' translates the same way to Latin (paene+insula -> almost island) as it does to Norwegian (halvøy -> half island) whereas 'headland' is a more specific term. Komonzia (talk) 02:05, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I agree that Tollerodden is not strictly a penninsula ("halvøy"), but headland sounds to me as much bigger, more like a small cape. We call both cape and headland for "nes", and "odde" (and "tange") is a lot smaller. Odde can devide two small beaches; would you call that headland? But I am Norwegian, so I don't know what sounds most correct for the small area Tollerodden. Jeppejul (talk) 05:54, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also; the land inside Tollerodden is quite low. I live in Risør and here is a 1,1 km long and narrow rocky "island" connected with almost same length to lower land with sandy beach in both ends, and this is called "halvøy" (penninsula). If it had been turned 90 degrees, it could have been called either "odde" or "halvøy", a matter of choice. As it is, both ends are "odder"! Jeppejul (talk) 06:36, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, given that context, I think it's best to stick to calling it a 'small peninsula', at least until there's an English-language reliable source that classifies it as a point or headland. :) Also have to consider that the name came from an older version of the language (so it could be similar to the Isle of Dogs which was never an island).
