Welcome to WikiProject Outlines

[edit]

Hi there.

Thank you for joining up.

Are you available to help in general?

If you are interested, I can point out the most urgent tasks.

Also, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Welcome!

Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   21:38, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I am definitely interested in helping with the most urgent tasks that you mentioned. What can I do to help? Thanks in advance! Inkycosmos (talk) 15:30, 4 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Cool.

Drafts. The outline department has 140 drafts in the "Draft:" namespace.

One aspect of the "Draft:" namespace is that drafts are only allowed to be in there if they've had an edit within the past six months. There are bots that automatically delete drafts that go six months without any edits.

Our immediate challenge at all times is to keep those drafts edited frequently enough so that they don't disappear. Beyond that, our goal is to complete those drafts and move them to the encyclopedia itself (which is often called the "article namespace" or "main namespace"). Outline drafts moved prematurely risk being deleted at the AfD (Articles for Deletion) department, which is a whole other ball game.

We have a tool to keep track of outline drafts. It's the outline draft tracker. It's a page on which to list all outline drafts, that automatically shows the date of the last edit upon each.

The drafts with January dates are approaching the 6-month mark. Those need new edits. Here's the link:

Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines/Draft tracker

Please edit as many outline drafts as you can on an ongoing basis (one a day is optimal except for outlines that have bunched up on the same drop dead day that sneaks up on you). To see how outlines are formatted and organized, check out the set of outlines at Wikipedia:Contents/Outlines

There are instructions on how to develop outlines at Wikipedia:Outlines.

Don't worry about the redlinks on the tracker page. Our main concern for the time being is not to let any more links turn red.

Now that we've covered existing drafts, here are a few words on creating new outlines: avoid draftspace.

If you create a new outline, it is best to have it as a subpage of your user page, or in your sandbox. I prefer to use multiple sandboxes ("/Sandbox001", "/Sandbox002", etc.), in case I have multiple projects going at the same time.

There's a department called "AfC" (Articles for Creation). It's optional. Seasoned editors generally don't use it. I don't recommend submitting works there, as it flips the deletion process upside down to an approval process where a page can get rejected before it even becomes an article in the encyclopedia. The worse rejection is "we don't need an article on that subject", which is of course completely subjective.

You can create articles directly in the main namespace as stubs, but outline stubs are seen by some as nearly useless, and are likely to get deleted at AfD, so it's best to build a new outline to completion quickly elsewhere (either offline or in your userspace) and then move it to the main namespace when it is ready.

Wrapping up, let me again welcome you to the outline department and to Wikipedia as a whole. I've been around a long while, have made hundreds of thousands of edits, have created several departments and participated in many more, and have done a lot of work on Wikipedia's navigation systems (of which, the outlines are one). If you have questions on any aspect of Wikipedia, please feel free to ask.

Thank you for volunteering to help on outlines!

Thanks for your help! Sorry that it took me so long to get to working on outlines. I've made minor edits to a few outline drafts in order to keep them from being deleted. If you need any help, let me know! :D Inkycosmos (talk) 15:45, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Took care of the ones slated for deletion August 4th. The next date that outlines drop dead is August 10th, which means they must be edited by August 9th (UTC). I'm not sure how many of those I can do. They are followed closely by more to go dark on August 11th and 15th. Any help you could provide keeping up, would be most appreciated.    — The Transhumanist   10:13, 2 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. I'm also working on Draft:Outline of astrobiology while I can in order to move it out of the draft section. Thanks for your time! Inkycosmos (talk) 16:20, 2 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What did you mean "order it out?" You can move a draft to article space directly without asking for permission. You just click "Move" in the menus along the top of the page, and follow the directions. If you move a draft prematurely, you risk it going to AfD, or somebody might reverse your move.    — The Transhumanist   12:40, 5 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
