Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:35, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Bracha L. Ettinger article, and my new Wikipedia hero

[edit]

Equinox, I just stumbled (unfortunately) upon the Bracha L. Ettinger article, and...well, what can I say? If your memory extends back to Jan 2022, which is when you commented on the talk page there, I need say no more.

I just added another topic to that page, piggybacking on the sentiments expressed by several bemused editors in reaction to that rather...unusual article, although none was more articulate than yourself. ("Still the most embarassing article on Wikipedia." Screw Shakespeare, you are the true bard.)

And so here I am, stopping by to visit your page. I read your self-description, and fell in love, so to speak. (My wife of 30 years falls into a different category.) As with you, the large majority of my edits are of the basic grammar and readibility type. Unlike you, perhaps, I once, in a previous life, put in serious effort to try and inject a modicum of balance, or even sanity, into some of the lunacy-filled articles one occasionally sees around these parts; eventually I was harassed into (mostly) silence. If the gods of Wikipedia have concluded that criticism of AOC is absolutely unacceptable but criticism of God appropriate, who am I to argue? Clearly I lack the wisdom to truly understand such matters.

The fact that I am not a digital native, and possess only the most rudimentary understanding of the basic editing rules of Wikipedia, has not been to my advantage. As such I have become somewhat accustomed to having my edits all too often reverted without a hint of sense or objectivity. Indeed, in my former life, I routinely had my editing rights suspended by those who have been graced with far more wisdom and knowledge than I could ever hope to acquire. Which is why, these years, I usually limit myself to fixing spelling and grammatical errors. It seems we share an aversion to such matters, without which there is no adequate explanation for spending time on such trivial pursuits, particulary since a significant percentage of even the seemingly most benign corrections find the attention of some pissed-off editor somewhere, who finds good cause to revert 23 spelling corrections in one fell swoop because...well, I don't know why, as I simply lack the wisdom to keep up, as noted above.

All the best. Hope I'm still around to read any potential response, and have not yet been summarily dismissed from the honor and privilege of remaining an editor of this most august, electronic publication.
