David Thomson
[edit]Hello! I'd just like to know why my edit on David Thomson's page was reverted. According to research on Ancestry.com, Thomson had four children, including Judith, who is not listed. 77eagle (talk) 11:36, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- @77eagle: I took another look at the edit, and restored it. The reason I had reverted it was that a comment in the infobox had previously listed 4 children by name, and when you added Judith it ended up listing 5 names (Ann, Judith, Priscilla, John, Miles). However, I see that part of your edit was to list the 4 children in the text of the article (Ann, Judith, Priscilla, and John). Given that the names appear in the text of the article, I cleared the comment in the infobox. I'll trust that your research into the names of the children is accurate. That said, it would be better to cite a source of those names, preferably a published work rather than just the Ancestry site. Thanks. Dmoore5556 (talk) 14:22, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- I will search for a non-Ancestry source for the children's names. Thank you for your response. 77eagle (talk) 14:28, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- I'm having a hard time finding information about any of David's children beyond what's available on Ancestry.com. I know that David had a daughter named Judith, but no other genealogical site can agree on who his other children were or who they married. I'm descended from Judith Thompson through her marriage to John Libby, a settler of Scarborough, ME, but besides Ancestry, Judith is not listed with a last name. I don't know if that had something to do with Amias' remarriage and her old husband's suspicious death, but even her other children by David have varying appearances. On one site, David has a son named Miles, as you mentioned, but on other sites, Miles does not exist or is not David's son. John doesn't appear on Geni.com or in genealogy books of New England families, and Ann either died as a child or in her 20s; beyond that, I have no info for her. I want to get your opinion on this whole situation because I think that the children's names on this page were inputted a long time ago and never updated. David Thompson is too notable a figure in my opinion to have an abandoned page.
- Thank you! 77eagle (talk) 15:56, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- @77eagle: I think it's best to state that sources differ on the names of the children, as you point out above, noting the applicable sources. You could say something like: "sources agree that Thompson had four children, one of whom was named Judith, but sources differ on the names of the other three or do not list them by name." As your connection to the subject of the article seems to be quite remote, there shouldn't be an issue with WP:COI, but I would recommend citing all applicable sources while being careful not to wade into WP:OR.
