Image for reverse of Great Seal of the United States
[edit]Hello Chekoventerprise,
I noticed that you seem to be in a minor edit war at several articles over which image should be used for the reverse of the Great Seal. I have opened a talk page discussion at the main article so we can discuss and hash it out. Your edit summaries indicate that there may be prior discussion (you call them “warnings”) on this… it would be helpful if you could link to those discussions/warnings. Thanks. - I would like to provide some context. I was warned not to overwrite preexisting files on Wikimedia Commons. The warning did not say I couldn't upload and use my own file. Chekoventerprise has made a false claim that I am not allowed to edit Wikipedia articles to display my file. He has also made the false claim that my file is not sourced from anything released by the U.S. government, even though it is. HoosierMan1816 (talk) 14:17, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- Again, it would be helpful to see these “warnings” (and context) myself… can either of you link to the relevant discussions? Blueboar (talk) 15:27, 1 August 2025 (UTC)

- Ok… thanks… this helps. Could you please engage at Talk:Great Seal of the United States… I think there is confusion as to which files are being linked to. Blueboar (talk) 19:52, 1 August 2025 (UTC)

- I have responded in kind on the appropriate page already but I wrote this up while at work.
- Previously the user continually overwrote the officially used (i.e. used on government websites) image of the reverse of the Great Seal numerous times until he was warned to stop.
- The image he uses instead is based an interpretation of on a book illustration published in the 1970s, that is, not an actual .svg. Furthermore, despite claiming that he himself created this image of the seal (link), he has provided no proof he is the copyright owner, the image itself has been traced back to a non government website that sells apparel and other items. One would assume that we should go with the most recently made and currently used governmentally sourced image rather than an unofficial rendering that the user has dubious copyright claims over based off a book illustration from the 1970s.
