Barry C. McCarthy moved to article space
[edit]I have not yet created a disambiguation page, but should have time this weekend to sort out the best alternative title for Barry McCarthy. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 17:58, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Grand'mere Eugene, Thanks for your help on this biography. For the future, I learned to add the paywall lock and add a quote so it's easier for the reviewer. Let me know if you need any input for the disambiguation page!--Chefmikesf (talk) 18:27, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- After reading WP:DISAMBIG, the "primry topic" discussion convinced me to use disambiguation hatnotes rather than creating a disambiguation page. Since the Barry McCarthy bio has at least a dozen incoming links from cricket pages, it clearly is the primary topic, and changing its title to Barry J. McCarthy would have meant changing all the incoming links. If there are other Barry McCarthy articles in the future, a Barry MCarthy (disambiguation) page would need to be created, and incoming links revised then. It just seemed to me that that hatnotes will suffice. Let me know if this doen't make sense to you. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 01:06, 29 June 2025 (UTC)
Bath Iron Works
[edit]I apologize for my delay in responding to your comment in the BIW talk page. I agree the ships listed are appropriate for adding to the article, but I don't have a convenient source for that information. Much of my work on Wikipedia has been 20th century history. I grew up in southern Maine, but I have spent the last half century in California.
I would certainly support adding the ships mentioned, but it sounds as if we may encounter some editors with a serious attitude problem concerning the defense industry. I would feel more comfortable making the changes to refocus the article on history; but, as might be inferred by my delay in responding, I presently find myself distracted by our rapidly evolving national government.
I greatly admire the history section of your General Dynamics sandbox article. I have just a few comments about the last paragraph of the 1941-1960 section. Aside from the misspelling of General, I seem to remember the first Polaris boats were modifications of Skipjack-class attack submarines under construction with contract modification separating bow and stern sections to insert the missile tube compartment to hasten availability of the weapon system. If so, I think that might be worthy of mention.
I feel less qualified to assess the latter portion of the article, although I noticed a double listing of current ships of the United States Navy in the See also section. I was also curious as to why St. Marks Powder wasn't listed in the Acquisitions timeline. In view of the plant's significance to national firearms propellant production, I am concerned about the vulnerability of St. Marks to rising sea level and increasing hurricane intensity. If you feel comfortable discussing the situation, I would value your thoughts about that situation. Thewellman (talk) 03:02, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Thewellman, Wow! What a coincidence, I was born in Maine (Franklin County) and now live in California too.
- For the Bath Iron Works ships, I posted independent secondary sources on the BIW talk page if your perspective changes about other editors.
- Thanks for the compliment on the General Dynamics history sandbox. The article is long, so I started with a rewrite of 1899 - 1980. When I rewrote it, I kept all the existing content, added missing sources, and then added new content from online sources and the books I found at the library. Based on your comments, I corrected the minor errors I made and added a few sentences about the Polaris boats. What are your thoughts? If you're okay with the History 1899-1980, could you publish that? Or feel free to let me know what else I can do to improve the sandbox. I can start working on the history 1980-present after we publish 1899-1980.
- I'm not familiar with St. Mark's or can find many sources, let me get back to you on that.

- I spent a good deal of time in Salem, Maine, during the 1960s. A friend owned an isolated old farmhouse used as a cabin for skiing trips, and during the summers we would climb Mount Abraham and explore the remnants of the old Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad. - @Thewellman, Wow so cool! My dad worked at Sugarloaf Mountain so I'm familiar with all locations you mentioned. Regarding the General Dynamics history content, do you have anymore input or should I move that conversation to the sandbox talk page?--Chefmikesf (talk) 21:58, 13 August 2025 (UTC)
