- *bows in deference* I most appreciate your kind attention and welcoming, Greengo... Oh my! Your userpage is such a precious giant cheatsheet! I shall save it and keep it, somehow, somewhere, for future consultation. Bytekast (talk) 15:28, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
Proposal
[edit]I saw your Village Pump proposal, and I just have to say, I really like your style. ꧁Zanahary꧂ 23:44, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Zanahary I appreciate that! I oft try to follow a precise, logical, rule-minded style, without forcing it upon others.
- About the proposal, I haven't given up yet; not all is lost. I still think it's important to follow that rule (in formal language if anything), so I'll try to make it into WP:MoS. That way, any edits correcting (say) "it was them who saw it" to "it was they who saw it" will be justifiable with the "per MOS" edit summary. Bytekast (talk) 01:03, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- Getting consensus specifically for that example would be a lot easier than getting consensus for your more expansive proposal. Good luck! ꧁Zanahary꧂ 01:17, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Zanahary I noticed that, under the Grammar section of the Manual, there's only advice on things concerning writing to the encyclopedia itself, such as (Pronouns subsection) "don't use 'I' and 'you'; keep an impersonal tone", "almost never use 'editorial we'", "don't use 'generic he'; use 'singular they'". Also under Verb tense: "Write articles in the present tense". There are no "grammar for its own sake" recommendations, unlike (say) in newspapers' manuals of style, which cover full-on usage. My proposal would go against that. What I've understood from that is that editors are expected to know formal grammar before editing, including that it's inappropriate to write "That was her." in a formal text; whom is not mentioned or covered either, because we (not us!) editors should know better. Yea, I like it, let's keep it that way. I shall not bother WP with my proposal any further. Bytekast (talk) 12:51, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
