Managing a conflict of interest
[edit] Hello, Bill Harcourt. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page User:Bill Harcourt/sandbox, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the Edit Request Wizard), including links or details of reliable sources that support your suggestions;
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam § External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. jlwoodwa (talk) 09:01, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the links, I am a novice at building wikipedia pages, and have accidently submitted the page before completion. as a result some of the references don't line up etc. I want to attach a COI as you suggest, as I am Geoff Harcourt's son. I don't think this is really a 'vanity project' as he ranks equally amongst many of his contemporaries who also have wikipedia pages.
- How do I find the page I have written so I can continue to draft it? Bill Harcourt (talk) 11:40, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. To disclose a conflict of interest, just add
{{User COI|Geoffrey David Harcourt}}
to your userpage. Your draft is at User:Bill Harcourt/sandbox. I recommend reading Help:Your first article, which gives a good overview for beginners; one of the pages it links to is WP:REFVISUAL, which explains how to add inline citations (to show which references support each part of an article). Personally, I would suggest learning how to edit Wikipedia by contributing to existing articles in an area where you have no conflict of interest; learning how to write neutrally about someone you know is a challenge of its own. If you have any more questions about this, feel free to ask me or at the Teahouse. jlwoodwa (talk) 03:36, 9 August 2025 (UTC)
