The size of the town is small, the influence is closer to the forest area in the northwest. The area is only 24.1 km². The population of Montmeyran is reaching about 2,962 inhabitants as of 2022. The name of Montmeyran comes in Occitan language. The town in the native language which is called them Mount-Meiran in Mistralian form and in classical form is Montmairan.

The first part of the toponym comes from the Latin mons “mountain, mount, elevation” which can designate a simple hill, in a plain country.

The second part would derive from a Latin male name Marius with the suffix -anum. Note that some historians place Montmeyran as the site of the victory of the Roman general Caius Marius over the Cimbri.

Attached to the Valence Romans Agglo urban community, the commune is located 14 km south-east of Valence (prefecture of the Drôme department), halfway between Valence and Crest.
