Shandur Samar Lake, nestled in the picturesque Kumrat Valley of Upper Dir, KPK, Pakistan, is a hidden gem for hiking enthusiasts. Located at 35°18'22"N 72°13'38"E and standing at an elevation of 3,603 meters (11,820 feet), this lake boasts crystal-clear waters that shimmer in hues of green and blue. The lake's beauty transforms with the seasons—blanketed in snow during winters and vibrant with blooming flowers in summers. The journey to the lake begins in Biar village near Sheringal, where trekkers embark on a gradual 14-kilometer ascent along a serene stream, passing by waterfalls and breathtaking scenery. This trek to Wadeeh Camping Point takes around 6-9 hours, offering stunning views and an immersive experience in nature. From the camping point, it's an additional 45 to 60 minutes to reach Shandur Samar Lake, making the scenic journey even more rewarding. There are two more small but beautiful lakes on the way to the big one. Interestingly, locals refer to this lake as Shandur Lake, often leading to confusion with the more famous Shandur Lake at Shandur Pass. The lake is named in honor of Dr. Raza Samar, who led the first formal and large hiking group to the destination. The pioneering group included Tanveer Abbasi, Asif Iqbal, Nabeel Shoukat, Muhammad Ameen, Ahmed Wadeeh, Shoaib Hashmi, Zikria Bashir, Naeem Gul, Asad Mahmood, and Najmul Hassan. Notably, Mrs. Rafia Raza, Mrs. Samina Tanveer, and Mrs. Fouzia Asif made history by becoming the first female hikers to reach this breathtaking destination, further adding to the lake's allure and adventurous spirit.
