Old Vandalism Discovered

[edit]

Here is the oldest vandalism I have discovered on Wikipedia.

Page Vandalism Date Revert Date Time Undetected Description
Cary, North Carolina 26 July 2006 6 November 2025 19 years, 123 days The list of mayors of Cary was added to the Cary, North Carolina page by Ke4roh on 19 May 2004. The list had no source originally, however, I reached out to Ke4roh on their talk page. They directed me to a video that referenced Around and About Cary. After renting this book from my library, I found the list. The list from the book matches the list added to Wikipedia except Ke4roh added John Nugeer and the mayors who served following the publication of the book. On 26 July 2006, IP editor 60.229.190.100 vandalized Cary, North Carolina twice. First they changed “females” to “shemales”. This was reverted 1 minute later. But next, they added two names to the unreferenced list of mayors. “E. C. Hayes” who supposedly served in 1900 and “G. S. Leacock” who supposedly served in 1914, with no references. These names were eventually moved into a separate List of mayors of Cary, North Carolina article. After researching these mayors, I found evidence they were made up. E. C. Hayes is harder to disprove since early town records are missing. The town records were first lost in a fire in 1908 and later after the resignation of many town officials in 1937. (Town of Cary Mayors video) So the Mayor of Cary in the year 1900 is unknown currently. However, G. S. Leacock’s term in 1914 is contradictory. That places Leacock right in the middle of the well established term of Dr. James McPherson Templeton Jr. who served two terms from 1911-1913 and 1913-1915. (1921 North Carolina Manual) (Town of Cary Mayors video) Given the previous edit, a mayor listed as serving when a different mayor was actually incumbent, and no other source naming these as mayors, I concluded the editor made these mayors up. I removed the mayors from the list on 6 November 2025, 19 years and 123 days later. This became the Wikipedia record for longest undetected vandalism on an article! Also, on 15 May 2007, 124.187.141.58 made their only edit by changing T. F. Wilkinson to A. R. McGarrity in the list of Mayors of Cary, once again without a source. T. F. Wilkinson was eventually correctly added back to the list, however, A. R. McGarrity was not removed. Again, this mayor was not found on any sources I could find and I also removed the name on November 6, 2025, 18 years, 175 days later.
Portici 1 December 2018 10 November 2025 6 years, 344 days IP editor 62.98.163.85 made their only edit on 1 December 2018. They added Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as a notable person from Portici, Italy (he is actually from Salzburg, Austria). As a reference, they added the book "Ruggiero Cappuccio, Fuoco su Napoli" which is actually a fiction book. I noticed this and reverted it on 10 November 2025.
Athens Drive High School 15 December 2021 21 May 2024 2 years, 158 days User Wembly made their only edit on 15 December 2021, changing the enrollment from 2,075 to 2,730 for Athens Drive High School's 2020–21 school year. This may have been a good faith edit if this figure was read somewhere else but the much-higher enrollment is not supported by the Wake County Public School System source and no new source was provided. I found and reverted this change on 21 May 2024 (2 years + 158 days later). However, this revert quickly became moot since I updated the enrollment counts for the 2023–24 directly afterwards.
Thirteen Colonies 9 February 2021 13 July 2023 2 years, 154 days IP editor 181.142.171.112 subtly changed the year of the Rhode Island Royal Charter on the infobox of Thirteen Colonies article from 1663 to 1673 in this edit on 9 February 2021. I found and corrected this incorrect year while reading the article on 13 July 2023 (2 years + 154 days later). Their only other edit was changing the end year of the 13 colonies from 1776 to 1666, which was corrected much quicker.
