Marko Stupar (born 8 December 1981) is a former professional handball player and current coach with Serbian, Bosnian, and Luxembourgish nationality. During his playing career, he competed in Serbia, Belgium, and Luxembourg, most notably for HC Berchem. As a coach, he has led teams in Luxembourg, winning the national championship (2023–24), Luxembourg Cup, and Supercup (2024–25), and was named Coach of the Year in Luxembourg in consecutive seasons (2023–24, 2024–25).[1][2][3][4][5]

Early life and education

Born in Belgrade, Stupar took his first handball steps in local youth and senior teams. He has often stated that he persisted in handball thanks to the support of his father, who accompanied him from the very beginning of his sporting career. He graduated from the Higher Coaching School at the University of Belgrade (specializations: Senior Handball Coach; Senior Strength Sports Coach) and holds the EHF Master Coach license.

Playing career

Stupar played in Serbia, Belgium, and Luxembourg. From 2016 to 2021, he was a member of HC Berchem.

Coaching career

Stupar began his coaching career at Handball Schifflange, leading youth teams and serving as a player-coach for the senior squad. Since 2016, he has worked at HC Berchem, initially coaching youth teams (U21 and U15) and later becoming assistant coach, before taking over as head coach of the senior team in 2022. His achievements with HC Berchem include winning the national championship (2023–24), the Luxembourg Cup (2024–25), and the Supercup (2024–25).

Coaching philosophy

His coaching philosophy is based on attention to detail, long-term player development, and a competitive spirit. Among the coaches who influenced his career are Boran Grbović, Nenad Lakić, Nenad Kraljevski, Marko Isaković, and Vladan Jordović, as well as European coaches Talant Dujshebaev, Manolo Cadenas, Juan Carlos Pastor, and Raúl González Gutiérrez. He names Dejan Gajić as his mentor.

Stupar is married to handball player Doris Monteiro Costa Stupar. They live in Luxembourg.
