Legislative status Rationale
Green: party is in government
Majority Party achieves or governs alone with more than half of the seats.
Supermajority Party achieves or governs alone with two-thirds of the seats.
Minority Party governs alone however without a majority in legislature.
Coalition Party governs with other parties, regardless whether the coalition is a majority or minority.
Yellow: party sits outside of government but supports it
External support Party provides explicit support or confidence to the government.
Confidence and supply Westminster terminology; party provides votes in confidence and supply bills.
Opposition
with other arrangements
Party remains in opposition but has specific arrangements with the government in terms of programme; no guarantee of confidence to the government.
Cooperation agreement Green party terminology; party settles with the government a signed agreement in terms of programme. May or may not include or guarantee confidence to the government.
Red: party sits in opposition
Opposition Party is the main opposition ('official' status in Canada) and with the most seats that is not in or supports the government. Also used for other countries with no distinction for opposition party status.
Crossbench Westminster (i.e. Australian) terminology; party sits in opposition but is not the main opposition.
Third/Fourth party Westminster (i.e. Canadian) terminology; party sits in opposition but with recognised status.
No status Party is in opposition but has no recognised status/group in legislature.
Blue: inconclusive election result
Snap election No government formed within the time period and another election is called. Caretaker government may either be the incumbent or a technocratic government.
Grey: unrepresented in legislature
No seats Party is not represented in the legislature; has no seats.
