• Joseph Higginson 1792-1881, British Royal Marine from Tyldesley who fought in the Napoleonic Wars during the Invasion of Java in 1811. Who was later photographed and went on the become the last surviving veteran of the Invasion of Java and died in 1881.
• James Rowntree 1716-1782, A landowner from Lanercost. Who owned Rowntree Hill - a farmstead on the banks of Craig Sike in the Parish of Lanercost - he also owned and sold Roanstrees in 1754 which is also a farmstead but in the parish of Bewcastle.
