Methodological disclaimer: English is not my native language. I have an advanced level, but I still would make many mistakes in writing. For a long time I've considered this reason an hindrance too big to allow me to edit on en.wiki, and I've limited my edits to it.wiki. Now I'm reconsidering this approach. The improvements of AI translators are so big, that they create texts that will only have a few errors. Therefore, and also because of profound disagreements over the course that the italian wikipedia edition is taking, I've decided to give it a try to an AI-assisted contribution on en.wiki. My texts in italian will still be written entirely by me (without any involvement of AI), but instead of publishing them on it.wiki, I'll translate them and I'll publish them here. The translation will be AI-assisted: that means that I'll check every sentence to make sure - for example - that the meaning hasn't changed, and that there are no hallucinations etc. This is something that I can check with a very good level of accuracy. Of course, AI translators will still make also errors in the correct way of forming english sentences, for example weird phrasings too similar to the original in italian. I'll do my best to fix also these errors, but I can't guarantee that the result will be 100% flawless from the linguistic perspective. Until now there have been positive feedbacks, but if you think that these errors are too much of a burden on the native speakers, that will have to check and fix them, please let me know: I'll stop this kind of editing immediately.
If I'll succeed though, then I think that this means that the non-english wikipedia editions are going to get extinguished in the next 10-20 years: it simply won't make any sense to write an article in Italian about the Russian civil war: if you want to add something you'll be able to write in italian and your contribution will be machine-translated to English and from there in every language. Of course you'll need some kind of tagging for machine-translated articles and parts of articles, in order for them to be checked by humans at least from the "consistency point of view", checking that there are no hallucinations (and that would be the great "if": would there be enough volunteers to be able to check everything?).
I'm using this method only to write articles, not to write messages in talk pages, etc (from these messages - including the present one - you can also assess my actual English level without the AI-enhancement).
