The Dialogue Peace Group (or Dialogue Peace Movement) was an independent, explicitly non-political peace movement formed in the 1980s, whose activities were actively obstructed by the state security services of the one-party regime. The movement was launched on June 26, 1982, on the initiative of university students. Through peaceful means—organizing public lectures, discussions, camps, and excursions—they promoted peace and disarmament, while addressing not only the responsibility of NATO countries but also that of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. Their efforts were obstructed by a wide-ranging campaign initiated by the state security services. After several foreign visitors arriving for the July 1983 peace camp were arrested and expelled by the police, and Hungarian activists had their passports confiscated, the membership concluded that despite their lawful and open operation, their continued existence had become untenable. As a result, the group voted to dissolve itself at a general assembly held on July 9, 1983. The youngest and more radical members of the group disagreed with the decision and soon began reorganizing, this time placing greater emphasis on public actions. Due to renewed harassment by the state security services, Dialogue permanently ceased operations in January 1984.
