- 1945 – Ben Chifley becomes sixteenth Prime Minister of Australia.
- 1961 – Australian rules footballer, Tim Watson is born.
- 1997 – A crowd of over 100,000 people watch the Royal Canberra Hospital implosion. Twelve-year-old Katie Bender is killed instantly when debris from the site travels across Lake Burley Griffin.
