Infernal Terror is an Irish death metal band from Galway. Founded in May 2024 asLost Dreams, the band has gone through multiple names and styles, all under the constant leadership of lead vocalist and bassist Andrew Brotherton. Currently, the band consists of Brotherton, near constant member Markó Sukhyi (guitars, backing vocals), David Mullin (guitars, backing vocals), and William Kolgjini (drums, backing vocals.

History

[edit]

Foundation

[edit]

Andrew Brotherton first took an interest in becoming a musician around October 2023. Having been inspired by Nirvana, Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam, Brotherton originally wished to become a drummer. When telling his parents of his aspirations, they instead persuaded him to get an acoustic guitar instead due to lack of space.

Brotherton would form Infernal Terror on 12 May 2024, originally as Lost Dreams as lead vocalist. Envisioned as a solo project, Brotherton would add his then-partner Soph DeB as its second member, playing keyboards and piano. Soon the search for a guitarist, bassist and drummer began. Mathew Krynicki, a friend of Brotherton joined on guitar in June, the band now being Horrid Hydrangeas. As the search for a drummer continued, Brotherton made the decision to learn bass, in addition to his role as vocalist.

Horrid Hydrangeas (July to December)

[edit]

After Brotherton and DeB ended their relationship on 4 July that year, she would leave the band. The announcement of her leaving mentioned the band becoming a three piece of a bassist/vocalist, guitarist and drummer. Brotherton and Krynicki carried on as a duo until they made the decision to have Markó Sukhyi join as rhythm guitarist two weeks later, continuing their look for a drummer to form a four piece. At this time the band was considered alternative metal and grunge, however the presence of Sukhyi brought a new found thrash metal influence. In August Brotherton acquired his bass, allowing him to carry out his role as bassist and vocalist. Sukhyi was also given the responsibility of performing of additional lead vocals as well as backing vocals.

During August and September, the band carried on their search for a drummer, to little avail. Following two unsuccessful interviews, Sukhyi gave the band a choice to quit guitar and learn drums. Though Krynicki had no qualms with being a sole guitarist, Brotherton decided to persuade his friend Aaron Walsh to join his band upon learning drums, which he had taken an interest in. In October Sukhyi was asked to take on additional keyboard duties due to his acquiring of an electric keyboard.

In December, Walsh would begin drum lessons, awaiting his possible membership of Horrid Hydrangeas. In the meantime, band friend Adam Nagajek was asked to play with the band for any future gigs. This lineup remained stable until communication between lead guitarist Krynicki and the rest of the band, in part due to his other band Obscene and a shift towards heavier more extreme styles of metal, brought on by Brotherton and Sukhyi. Krynicki was kicked out of the band on Christmas Day, and was replaced as lead guitarist by Christian Tuohy.

Line up changes, name changes (January to April 2025)

[edit]

Upon Tuohy’s arrival, the band would continue to shift from an alternative metal band to a band influenced by death metal, sludge metal, and thrash metal. Nagejek was let go from live drumming duties, due to scheduling conflicts with his own band Talllon and also a reluctance to play live by the guitarists.

Sukhyi would help found the rock band Szlachta in January 2025 alongside 5 others as its lead guitarist, contrasting with his concurrent role of rhythm guitarist of his original band. In February, the band would finally begin to plan performing live, though presumably not under their then name of Horrid Hydrangeas. The band by this time had evolved into what would be described as "death-sludge".

The band would change its name to Exhumation in March, with a stated reason of frontman Brotherton wishing to give a darker image than the original name used for the majority of the band’s history. Sean Marlowe would join the band on 23 March, replacing Aaron Walsh, as Walsh was uninterested in performing with a band and preferred drumming alone. Brotherton and Tuohy would begin clashing over songs and set lists, Tuohy wanting to take a far more proactive role, play only original music, and write said music by himself. Brotherton opposed this, wishing for a set list of covers and original music, which would be used to give time for him to write lyrics.

Due to spite and wishing to play live, Brotherton would join the Headford-based metal band Blackwater as vocalist and bassist, to perform at their first (and only) gig in April. Concurrently staying with Exhumation.

Name change to Infernal Terror (April to June)

[edit]

On 3 April, Sean Marlowe would leave the band, citing that he did not fit with the other members and the style of music the band was playing. Despite him saying he’d help find the band a new drummer, this came to no avail. Disappointed by this, Brotherton suggested to Sukhyi that the two record a demo as a duo under the Exhumation name and have his then Blackwater bandmate David Mullin do drum programming and production on the demo.

During preparation for Blackwater’s upcoming gig, Brotherton invited Mullin and his bandmate William Kolgjini to join Exhumation after the concert, due to his frustration at the lack of communication between the band and Tuohy. Agreeing to this, the gig on the 25 April was set as the day to kick out Tuohy and have the Headford duo join Exhumation. Tuohy was kicked out of the band amicably, told that the band’s friendship with him mattered more to them than the music and that it was for the best that the band carry on without him. Mullin and Kolgjini joined as lead guitarist and drummer respectively. Sukhyi also took on co-lead guitar duties, making Exhumation a dual lead guitar. Exhumation changed its name to Infernal Terror 3 days later, by recommendation of Mullin.

Plans for a demo were initiated in May, the band buying equipment for recording. Szlachta had also ceased to exist, as the band was left with only three members out of their original six. The new lineup played together under the new name for the first time at Youth Lates on 7 June, debuting the song Parasites. Plans for a demo were put on hold after the first recording sessions a week later, citing a need to improve and play as a band longer.

Live performances and recording (June - present)

[edit]

Plans for a gig with post-grunge band Infared and Limerick doom metal band Misery Goblin were announced in mid June, slated for Merlin Woods on 12 July. Not aware of the date till a few weeks prior and being without Mullin for most of July due to going to a pre planned trip to the Gaeltacht, the band with his approval decided to carry on with the gig and asked their friend and Nihilis frontman Aaron O'Connor to fill in on lead guitar.

New material besides the Parasites demo would be slow, as the band focused on improving their existing set list and preparing for rehearsals with O’Connor. After one practice a week prior to the gig, Brotherton decided to focus on the planning of the gig, and preparing for the rest of the bands and attendees. Misery Goblin dropped out around this time, and Arctic Haze were added on. Due to technical difficulties regarding being the only band at said event with two guitarists and also with the extreme heat, the bands set was cut short but were still generally received well. After Mullin returned from his trip on the 18th of July, the band would begin work on new music and improving their live show. After the death of Ozzy Osbourne on the 22nd, the band would start covering Symptom of the Universe.

In August, the band would rehearse for their opening slot for the Galway date of UK hardcore bands Thumbsucker and Prey tour with fellow Galway death metal band Genuflection, in the Ol’55. The band performed their longest set to date, 30 minutes and six songs. Due to the large turnout (mainly for Infernal Terror) the band was paid for the first time. That gig was the first time since Youth Lates that the band had performed with the full lineup.

The same month, the band finished up two new songs, Clerical Torture and Polluted Infectious Demise. Whilst Mullin wrote almost all of Clerical Torture (as per his role as principal songwriter), Brotherton contributed a riff to Clerical Torture, and wrote the majority of Polluted Infectious Demise, minus the main riff which was by Markó Sukhyi. Polluted Infectious Demise was debuted at the Man of Steel Festival on the 31st of August. Drummer Kolgjini did not perform due to a prior arrangement, so Nihilis drummer August Kearns filled in on his behalf.

In September the band continued to write new material, beginning to prepare for their gigs in October and recording in November. After announcing three gigs for October, the band would state that they would be taking a touring hiatus until the end of the year to focus on recording and individual members’ studies. Band friend and Talllon drummer Adam Nagajek died on the 14th of October at age 17 following a long illness.

Musical style and influences

[edit]

Infernal Terror has been described by members as primarily death metal, thrash metal, deathrash, technical death metal, and grindcore. The band takes inspiration and cues from genres such as black metal, war metal, post-thrash, sludge metal, goregrind, doom metal, hardcore punk, and gothic rock. In the past the band was simply described as "heavy metal", without emphasis on sub-genre, and also grunge, in light of the group’s early intended sound. Live, the band focuses on an intense mix, with mids heavy guitar, deep low ended overdriven bass, fast pummelling drumming, and growling vocals.

Andrew Brotherton has served as primary lyricist of the band since its inception, his lyrics concerning morbid topics such as gore, blasphemy, body horror, hatred, politics, antitheism, the occult, and satanism. David Mullin has been primary songwriter since his joining, making use of tremolo picking, chromatic chord progressions, and inverted power chords. Neither role is exclusive to either member, as all members have contributed to songwriting and lyrics. Brotherton is the primary lead vocalist, whilst the other members perform backing vocals. Markó Sukhyi occasionally performs lead vocals.

A wide range of bands, spanning from grunge to death metal and gothic rock, are cited as influences or inspirations for the group as a whole, including but not limited to Alice in Chains, Autopsy, Anthrax, Bathory, Bauhaus, Carcass, Celtic Frost, Cryptopsy, Cocteau Twins, Coroner, The Cure, Darkthrone, Death, Destruction, Deftones, Mastodon, Megadeth, Metallica, Motörhead, Napalm Death, Pantera, Pearl Jam, Queen, Rage Against the Machine, Rammstein, Sepultura, Sodom, Slayer, Slowdive, The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Suffocation, System of a Down, and Tool.
