Introducing myself
[edit]Hi I'm Ambrosia10, also known as Siobhan Leachman. I live in Wellington, New Zealand. I am currently (from September 2025) the Wikimedian in Residence with the Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research group of the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science.
I co-organise the Wiki Wellington meet up held monthly, as well as the Aotearoa New Zealand Online meet up, also held monthly. I actively volunteer for the Biodiversity Heritage Library and am the chair of the BHL-Wiki working group. I participant in multiple WikiProjects, mainly but not exclusively focusing on biodiversity topics. For more detailed information on my contributions see this page of statistics.
I'm active in undertaking outreach about the Wikiverse to biodiversity, citizen science and library related conferences. I'm interested in New Zealand, natural history, the OpenGLAM movement, supporting GLAM engagement with WikiProjects, and increasing the participation with and the generation of content in English Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons by under represented groups. I am keen supporter of Women in Red, events such as #1Lib1Ref, as well as the projects undertaken by New Zealand and international editors and institutions to engage with and improve English Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
In 2023 I was named Wikimedia Laureate.
More detail on my contributions to both the Wikiverse as well as other projects can been seen on my ORCID profile.

Conflict of interest statements
[edit]From 8 September 2025 to 30 June 2026 I have been appointed the Wikimedian in Residence (WiR) to the Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research Group (MWLR) in the newly formed government research organisation, the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science (NZBSI). This position is funded by a grant to NZBSI from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) .
MWLR Group within BSI holds five nationally significant biological collections - the Allan Herbarium, New Zealand Fungarium, the International Collection of Microorganisms from Plants, the New Zealand Arthropod Collection and the New Zealand Flax Collection (Living Plants) - all of which are rich in New Zealand endemic species. Other significant biological collections within the BSI include the National Forestry Herbarium. These collections are an invaluable resource of data and images to help improve the understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand's biodiversity.
The overarching aims of this WiR are to
- Develop a strategy for MWLR-BSI engagement with Wiki platforms.
- Develop long-term workflows and identify ways to integrate Wiki content creation into the process of mobilising specimen data.
- Engage and educate staff including facilitating discussions with staff to provide targeted education on the Wikimedia ecosystem, the impact of data reuse and Wikimedia’s outreach potential.
You can find out more about this project at the WiR project page.
In my capacity affiliated with MWLR and the BSI, my contributions to the Wikimedia movement are guided by a commitment to uphold the highest standards of accuracy, neutrality, and verifiability, in alignment with the Wikimedia movement’s core content policies and ethical guidelines. I acknowledge that my affiliation with MWLR and the BSI may create a perceived or actual conflict of interest in my Wiki contributions. My primary goal in contributing to the Wikimedia movement is to share knowledge and resources available through MWLR and BSI that are relevant and beneficial to the Wikimedia movement’s mission of providing free, reliable, and neutral information. I commit to transparently declare my affiliation with both MWLR and BSI in relevant discussions and when making contributions that could potentially be influenced by my connection to the organisation. I will refrain from editing Wikipedia articles where my contributions could be seen as leading to a direct conflict of interest, and I will instead propose changes on talk or discussion pages or through other appropriate Wikipedia channels. I will always strive to strictly abide by the accepted practices on conflicts of interest, neutrality, verifiability, notability and no original research of the particular project I am contributing to.
This statement is made in the interest of transparency and to uphold the integrity and quality of the Wikimedia movement as a trusted source of information for the world. My commitment is to contribute to the Wikimedia movement in a manner that respects its values and community guidelines. If you believe I have made an error or violated the community’s norms, please do not hesitate to contact me on my talk page.
Biodiversity Heritage Library
[edit]From January 2023 to June 2025, in a volunteer capacity, I was appointed as the Chairperson for BHL-Wiki Working group and thus have been associated with the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), a global consortium of natural history, botanical, and research libraries that work together to digitize and make biodiversity literature openly available to the world as part of a global biodiversity community.
In my capacity affiliated with BHL, my contributions to the Wikimedia movement are guided by a commitment to uphold the highest standards of accuracy, neutrality, and verifiability, in alignment with the Wikimedia movement’s core content policies and ethical guidelines:
- I acknowledge that my affiliation with the Biodiversity Heritage Library may create a perceived or actual conflict of interest in my Wiki contributions.
- I commit to transparently declare my affiliation with BHL in relevant discussions and when making contributions that could potentially be influenced by my connection to the organisation.
- I will refrain from editing content where my contributions could be seen as leading to a direct conflict of interest, and I will instead propose changes on talk or discussion pages or through other appropriate Wikipedia channels.
- My primary goal in contributing to the Wikimedia movement is to share knowledge and resources available through the Biodiversity Heritage Library that are relevant and beneficial to the Wikimedia movement’s mission of providing free, reliable, and neutral information.
- I will always strive to strictly abide by the accepted practices on conflicts of interest, neutrality, verifiability, notability and no original research of the particular project I am contributing to.
Te Papa
[edit]I obtained funding support from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand to undertake a residency at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa to run a 12 week WikiProject on Te Papa research expeditions. The funded aspect of this project ran from Monday 4th of March 2024 and ending Sunday 26th May 2024. Several events and presentations related to this project were held subsequent to this date which I undertook in a volunteer capacity.
Currently working on (as at October 2025)
[edit]- I have been appointed from the 8th of September until the 30th of June as Wikimedian in Residence for the Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research Group at the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy. For more information on this residency see the WiR NZBSI project page.
- I jointly run the Aotearoa New Zealand Online and Wellington In Person Wiki meet ups and will continue to do so in 2025.
- I have received funding from WANZ to virtually attend the LivingData 2025 conference from 21 - 24 October 2025 in Bogotá and am presenting on a wiki workflow integrating research expedition data from the Biodiversity Heritage Library into the Wikiverse. See the Living Data 2025 Commons category for links to my presentation, slide and supporting documentation. I am also a co-author on the extended abstract and talk entitled, "Wiki loves iNaturalist: How Wikimedians integrate iNaturalist content on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons" with co-authors and fellow Wikimedians Tiago Lubiana (first author and presenter), Richard Littauer, Jan Ainali, Manoj Karingamadathil, Andra Waagmeester, Heidi M. Meudt and Dario Taraborelli.
- I am co-organiser of the WikiProject ASBS 2025 which is a package of Wiki outreach to the Australasian botanical community for which my colleague Stitchbird2 and I received funding from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand. Together with Stitchbird2, we will attend the 2025 Australasian Systematic Botany Society Conference from 2 - 6 November 2025 in Armidale, Australia. As part of this international outreach, we
- have organised and run a one-hour online onboarding introductory workshop (14 October 2025),
- will put on a full-day in-person conference workshop to up to 25 botanists (2 November 2025),
- will present a 10-minute oral presentation about our Wiki outreach in the international botanical community entitled, "Botanists in the Wikiverse" on 4 November 2025 (slides and script on Zenodo), and
- continue to Wikify the conference, especially adding conference attendees and other ASBS society members (over 130 and counting) and their research to Wikidata.
- Ōtari-Wilton's Bush management has expressed interest for there to be a Wiki presence at their planned bioblitz to be held at that botanic gardens during the 2026 City Nature Challenge in April 2026. Stitchbird2 and I intend to actively take part in planning and executing this outreach opportunity.
- Stitchbird2 and I are also planning a further outreach with the New Zealand Plant Conservation Network Conference in October 2026.
- In January 2024 I accepted the nomination to the chairperson of the BHL-Wiki working group and am now working with both the BHL and Wiki communities to help progress our groups aims. As at June 2025 the BHL-Wiki working group will be taking a pause while those contributing to the administration and running of BHL attempt to find a replacement host institution. The Smithsonian, after hosting the administrative and technical functions of BHL, will no longer host the administrative functions of BHL as at 1 January 2026. Despite the pause in the meetings of this group I continue to work on BHL related content in Wiki and coordinate informal reporting of work undertaken by members of the group via the Biodiversity Heritage Library portion of the GLAMwiki newsletter.
- I continue to collaborate with a group of editors involved in researching and writing Wikipedia articles in Research Expeditions. This includes being a part of the TDWG Expeditions Task Group facilitating engagement with Wikidata, WikiCommons and Wikipedia.
- I continue to work on editing Wikipedia including New Zealand species articles, particular articles on endemic to New Zealand moths, and work on various Wikidata mix'n'match datasets, as well as adding images and structured data to Wikimedia Commons files.
Recently completed work
[edit]

- I recently collaborated with User:Stitchbird2 and User:Noracrentiss to organise two New Zealand species editathons held at Ōtari-Wilton's Bush in August. See the editathon pages for the 2nd of August event and the 9th of August event. We also wrote a final report on these editathons.

Projects
[edit]As usual I have several projects on the go:
New Zealand focused work
[edit]Endemic species
[edit]I'm continuing to work on New Zealand endemic species creating or expanding articles as I go. I'm currently editing Wikipedia articles on New Zealand moths with the assistance of access provided by the Wikipedia Library to academic resources. I also want to start created NZ mayfly articles as they are indicator species for water quality. See this resource for info (currently adding updated info into Wikidata). I'm also continuing to edit species articles that have a NZTCS status. See this query to get most commonly observed NZ insects species in iNaturalist.
GLAM content work
[edit]I'm also working on New Zealand GLAM content, particularly images sourced from New Zealand GLAM institutions such as Auckland Museum and Te Papa. I organise WikiCommons categories, upload to WikiCommons, adding metadata on paintings to Wikidata, and reusing the images in Wikipedia. I'm using appropriately licensed images from such organisations as the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, and iNaturalist to improve New Zealand species articles.
I've been assisting linking the National Library of New Zealand content in Wikidata via the Mix'n'Match tool and reusing appropriately licensed images and information contained in their collection in WikiCommons and Wikipedia. I'm also working on the Biodiversity Heritage Library and the Harvard Index of Botanists Wikidata Mix'n'match dataset.
New Zealand Threat Classification work
[edit]I admit this project is currently on the backburner but it is on my "to do's"! I am VERY slowly and gradually working through the New Zealand Department of Conservation Threat classification lists updating and creating articles on those New Zealand plants, animals and fungi who are listed as threatened, at risk or data deficient. I'm using these documents as a basis for this work. At some point I would also like to revamp the Wikipedia article outlining the New Zealand Threat Classification system as it appears significantly out of date. I've been reaching out to New Zealand GLAMs and other organisations to obtain photos of endangered or at risk fauna and flora.
Completed NZ Threat Classification work
[edit]- All scientifically described moths in this list now have an expanded or new article.
- Wikidata properties created and "easy to ingest" threat classifications are now uploaded into Wikidata. Still plenty of work to be done as some newly described species don't have wikidata items and there are of course issues with taxonomy used in New Zealand vs taxonomy used in the rest of the world.
New Zealand theses project
[edit]See the project page. I continue to contribute to this project, linking theses to Wikipedia articles, and working on the NZThesis Wikidata mix'n'match dataset.
General Work
[edit]Biodiversity Heritage Library
[edit]I actively engage with BHL and their affiliates assisting their engagement with the Wiki movement. See the BHL WikiProject page. I'm an invited guest/member on the BHL Cataloguing and Metadata Committee and am the current chair of the BHL-WIKI Working Group.
- See this query to assist with adding BHL author template to Wikipedia articles.
Research expeditions
[edit]I'm collaborating with a group of editors in Wikidata:WikiProject Research Expeditions. This work improves Wikidata items, Wikipedia articles and Wikicommons content on research expeditions. I am exploring the possibility of obtaining funding for and undertaking a Wikimedian in Residence pilot project at Te Papa focusing on trialling the Research Expedition schema being agreed to by the editors active in this WikiProject as well as the TDWG Modelling Research Expeditions Task Group. This pilot project would aim to implement the schema, feed back any suggested improvements to the schema to both the WikiProject as well as the TDWG task force, explore the "roundtripping" possibilities in museum collection management systems for the Wikidata QIDs, and hold events to improve the editing skills of both Te Papa staff, New Zealand based editors and anyone interested from the general public.
Resources for finding locations : Falling Rain; Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names; FuzzyG – JRC Fuzzy Gazetteer
Other participation
[edit]I'm an active participant in the Wikidata WikiProject Biodiversity and have appeared in the Wikipedia Weekly broadcasts dealing with this subject.
I'm also attempting to create or add to any articles on notable scientists, collectors or illustrators I've come across in my volunteer work with various citizen science platforms and the Biodiversity Heritage Library. I have also been using this resource http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/resources/collections/allan-herbarium/new-zealand-botanists to obtain information on New Zealand botanists. And of course I am keen to create Wikipedia articles on any notable New Zealand woman in order to combat the current gender bias in Wikipedia.
I'm continuing to work on zoological and botanical collectors, adding them into Wikidata, editing or creating articles where appropriate and then connecting them to their specimens in GBIF via the Bionomia website. My particular focus is New Zealand and women collectors but I tend to be omnivorous once I start a deep dive into content. I work on datasets in Wikidata mix'n'match including BHL creator ids and Index of Harvard botanists.
I'm also a keen contributor to efforts to improve coverage of early women scientific illustrators. See for example Wikipedia:GLAM/Illustrators of the Biodiversity Heritage Libraryand Artists and Scientific Illustrators. I'm working on various articles, Wikidata items and Wikimedia Commons categories about women especially those covered in publications found in the Biodiversity Heritage Library.
I contribute to the #1Lib1Ref campaign two times a year and am an active member of the WomenInRed WikiProject.
