Alan Garfield is Professor Emeritus of the Digital Art and Design Department at the University of Dubuque, in Dubuque, Iowa USA. He is an artist and an art historian and, in his retirement, continues to publish and be active in those fields. Since 1973, he has taught at Converse College (South Carolina), Southwest Missouri State University (Missouri), Creighton University (Nebraska), and Marycrest College (Iowa) before joining the University of Dubuque. He served as director of various university galleries and established the Bisignano Art Gallery at the University of Dubuque (2008) where he served as its first director until retirement.
While at the University of Dubuque, along with his wife Phyllis Garfield (Director of International Student Services), he established the International Studies Program (ISP) in 2000. They organized and led 62 short term study programs between 2000 and 2022 to Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Spain, The Netherlands, and the UK.
He is currently the Spiritual Leader of Temple Beth El in Dubuque, Iowa, traveling from Madison on a regular basis to serve the Jewish community of Dubuque in NE Iowa. In addition to various life-cycle events, he writes a weekly D’Var Torah column and teaches religious school at Temple Beth El in Madison. Both temples are members of the URJ.
Since 1991, he has spent summer months in the village of Meenaleck, County Donegal, Ireland.
In retirement, he and his wife live in Madison, Wisconsin, one house away from their grandchildren.
Garfield’s formal education is eclectic: BA, University of Iowa; MA, State University of New York-Binghamton; Postgraduate work Wadham College, Oxford. His interests, as measured by publications, include ethics in higher education, artificial intelligence, 2D and 3D animation algorithms, video game content, 19th century French philosophies, Holocaust studies, refugee art, and Beat Generation art and poetry. His CV lists over 50 peer reviewed publications and talks at various international conferences. His recent activites have been as an Invited Speaker and Conference Chair at the 5th ICEDS (International Conference on Education Development and Studies) at Cambridge University in April, 2024 and Conference Chair of the 6th ICEDS at Oxford University in March 2025.
