Timeline of science fiction

A photograph of a clay tablet with cuneiform writing
The starting point of science fiction depends on the definition used. By the broadest definition it began with the Epic of Gilgamesh (c. 2100 BCE), the oldest surviving work of fiction.[1] Seen here is the so-called Flood tablet.

This is a timeline of science fiction. While the date of the start of science fiction is debated, this list includes events included in timelines published by expert sources.[a]
