Template talk:BLP

I have proposed that active politician be merged into this template. Please comment at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2024 October 22#Template:Active politician — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:51, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

TfD has closed with consensus to merge. I have made the required changes in the sandbox. I think we can shorten the message in future, but for now I have kept both messages as verbatim in the merged version — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:55, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Documentation edit request

[edit]

Please could I request that something be added to the documentation for this template along the lines of "This template should not be manually added to talk pages". It does already say how it's automatically added at least. Thanks. -Kj cheetham (talk) 10:12, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: edit template-protected is usually not required for edits to the documentation or categories of templates using a documentation subpage. Use the 'edit' link at the top of the green "Template documentation" box to edit the documentation subpage. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:00, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
MSGJ Oh yes, of course. I've now modified Template:BLP/doc. Thank you. -Kj cheetham (talk) 11:56, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Namespace switch edit request

[edit]

Please change the following on lines 10, 11 and 12. This will make the template check which talk namespace it is in (main talk, draft talk, user talk), and display 'article' or 'draft' accordingly, with a fallback to 'page'.

| text = This article must adhere to the biographies of living persons (BLP) policy, even if it is not a biography, because it contains material about living persons. Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately from the article and its talk page, especially if potentially libellous. If such material is repeatedly inserted, or if you have other concerns, please report the issue to this noticeboard.{{#ifeq:{activepol}|yes |pbThis page is about a politician who is running for office or has recently run for office, is in office and campaigning for re-election, or is involved in some current political conflict or controversy. For that reason, this article is at increased risk of biased editing, talk-page trolling, and simple vandalism. }}pbIf you are a subject of this article, or acting on behalf of one, and you need help, please see this help page.

Implemented on the sandbox, note the testcases page will display this as saying 'page', as it's in the template namespace. See my personal sandbox for a user draftspace example. The template Connected contributor uses the same logic and live examples can be seen in the mainspace and draftspace. SnowyRiver28 (talk) 15:09, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please test this at Special:ExpandTemplates after checking your numbering at Template:Namespaces. There are errors in the above (e.g. namespace 1 is Talk, not article space). – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:11, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It needs to be talk, as this template is placed on talk pages not article pages. 1 is main space talk, 3 is draft talk, 119 is user talk.
I wasn’t aware of Special:ExpandTemplates so I’ll check that out and get back to you, thanks :) SnowyRiver28 (talk) 23:33, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonesey95 I've tested it on Special:ExpandTemplates inputting Talk:Sandbox, Draft talk:Sandbox, and Wikipedia talk:Sandbox, each of which outputted the expected result (article, draft, page).
I couldn't see an option to export the results of the Special:ExpandTemplates page or any way to show my findings here. Does this exist or is the implementing editor meant to do their own tests? SnowyRiver28 (talk) 01:15, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I misunderstood. I thought that you were off by one in each namespace, but I see that was intentional.  Done. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:28, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
