@Klbrain, thanks for your comment. For the benefit of future reviewers and editors, I´ll give a short explanation. There was some confusion about this world record. The one on file, and stated in the List of world records in speed skating, is rather old. Recently, faster times have been registered but these are not recognized as world records. The thing is that ISU used to organize competitions consisting of 2 races of 500m each and would assign a winner and an official time over the sum of the two races. The ISU still organizes official competitions with 2 races of 500m, but now assigns a winner and an official time for each race separately. They no longer register the total time over two races and therefore do not register new records over 2x500m. Nevertheless, the public and the press is aware and an "unofficial" new world record over 2x500m gets publicity.
