Earthquakes

"Novarupta generated as many as 14 major earthquakes with magnitudes between M6 and M7..." This has no citation and it's not mentioned in the other articles about Mount Katmai or Novarupta. Since the region was very sparcely populated at that time and there were probably not any seismographs in the region in 1912, I'm wondering how anyone would know this.
