Motivation for use
[edit]Inspired by this stackexchange discussion, I want to ask: why would I want to use an entropy that is not additive for independent subsystems? It seems that I could get into a big mess because the entropy would depend on how I decided to divide a given system into subsystems (a totally arbitrary choice). It's not clear why the Gibbs entropy needs to be "fixed" in this way. Nanite (talk) 14:13, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
I don't see how this other stub, unsourced for almost 14 years, is not about the same thing. Can we merge them? Bearian (talk) 05:50, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- There are different non-extensive extensions of entropy, see e.g. https://inspirehep.net/files/9870892d8a138ca5c09fcb5220113b14 for some of them. The confusing thing about Tsallis statistics and related concepts like these entropies is that they generate a huge number of citations, but they seem to form a closed system (group of authors citing themselves and each other; please correct me if I'm wrong). Based on the number of citations alone, the concept of "generalized entropy" seems notable, but is there a substantial, good-quality discussion about it in anywhere in the literature? I'm not opposed to merging, as Tsallis entropy might be the most notable example, and other generalizations can be contrasted to it on this page. Jähmefyysikko (talk) 08:00, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- A new discovery has been made that raises questions about the validity of the Tsallis entropy derivation. Prior to merging this article with nonextensive statistical mechanics, further evaluation should be completed. See, K. P.
