Talk:Obligation of identification

This article is at odds with the French version, which suggests that many European countries have similar rules. At the very least, I know that carrying an ID is mandatory in Belgium and the Netherlands (so a more onerous requirement as in Germany where citizens should merely reveal their identity and present a document within a certain period of time but can't be fined merely for not carrying an ID card). The reasons for singling out Germany are therefore unclear. GL (talk) 13:06, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Partial agree - it's not obligatory to carry in the Netherlands, as long as you're willing to take e.g. police to where your ID is stored (but they do like to frighten you into carrying it). Dutch Wikipedia mentions Belgium, France and The Netherlands. There is a much longer list here which seems to be much better maintained: List of national identity card policies by country
I'm too inexperienced an editor to deal with a merging process, but I suggest this article's data is merged into the more complete list. SuzannaQ (talk) 12:50, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
