Talk:Metadata

Is "computing" the right subheading?

[edit]

Since this article (correctly in my view) begins with a non-computing example, I wonder if the title might not be better as "Metadata (information)". This would keep it in line with entries such as Table.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.107.97.72 (talk) 16:01, 13 April 2005‎

I think it would be fine simply at Metadata. Michael Z. 2005-05-23 06:19 Z—Preceding undated comment added 06:19, 23 May 2005‎

Digital Camera Metadata linking across all applications?

[edit]

I just noticed my Netscape 7.2 program is now automatically displaying metadata for email message composition with digital camera images. By symbolic link?

Two new sections - What is "Metadata" and "Levels"

[edit]

I agree with the previous comment that the article is a bit disjointed. Much of the content is okay in isolation but as a whole it tends to confuse rather than enlighten. To address this, I have rewritten the Introduction and added two new explantory sections to get the key concepts across. Following this it is useful to talk about Definitions, Types, Uses, Issues etc. but the current content could usefully be revised to remove duplication and make less disjointed. I might have a go at this later. Pete S(talk) 29 March 2007‎

I found a topic that is related to this, which I think should be merged, Synset. The other article has been unsourced for 15 years, and might be better discussed in context. Please ping me when discussing this topic. Bearian (talk) 14:51, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

COI edit request: Suggestion to add AnalyticsCreator as metadata-driven automation example

[edit]

Hi editors,

I have a conflict of interest as I work with AnalyticsCreator, so I’m not editing the article directly. Instead, I’d like to suggest a small, sourced addition to the Data warehousing section to illustrate how metadata-driven automation works in practice.

    • Proposed addition (after the existing first paragraph):**

Some data warehouse automation platforms use metadata repositories to generate schema and pipeline code and to manage lineage. For example, AnalyticsCreator has been described by BARC as a metadata-driven automation tool focused on Microsoft technologies.[1] According to the vendor, it applies a metadata-first approach for Microsoft Fabric, generating pipelines, semantic models and documentation.[2]

    • Rationale:**

- The section currently explains metadata in data warehousing, but doesn’t show modern automation platforms that rely entirely on metadata. - BARC (an independent research and consulting firm) provides a third-party description of AnalyticsCreator’s metadata approach. - The vendor blog is used only to clarify the Microsoft Fabric angle. - The wording is neutral (no promotional claims, just describing function).

If editors feel this example is not appropriate, please let me know — I’m happy to revise or drop it. AnalyticsCreator (talk) 08:55, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: I'm 99% percent sure that the very presence of your company in the article is considered promotional in this context. The rest of the section, and frankly the article, is light on specific company and vendors - as it should be. Meepmeepyeet (talk) 22:45, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
