Technical information
[edit]I have several ways to improve this article, but I am also on the team that helps develop and support Memento. Because of my personal involvement, I wanted to start a discussion here to ensure that I'm not suffering from a conflict of interest by contributing to this Memento Project article.
I would like to contribute technical information about how Memento works, including, but not limited to, HTTP header examples, diagrams, and definitions of key concepts.
Sources:
- RFC 7089, published in 2013 standardizing Memento - http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7089
- Follow up 2010 Published Research paper on Memento - http://events.linkeddata.org/ldow2010/papers/ldow2010_paper13.pdf
- Initial 2009 Technical report created to describe Memento - http://arxiv.org/abs/0911.1112
How can I contribute salient information without falling victim to my conflict of interest?

"time travel" web portal?
[edit]"This month, the Memento group is launching a Web portal called Time Travel" says http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/01/26/cobweb which would be a solid reference, but I can't find any other mention, including on the memento project website and mailing list. Any other sources for this? Mike Linksvayer (talk) 21:35, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
`mementoweb.org` completely down/gone?
[edit]As of 7 Jul 2025, none of the Memento Project servers seem to be available on the internet. A `whois` shows that the domain is currently registered to 1 Sep 2025. There's been no commit activity to any of [their GitHub repositories](https://github.com/orgs/mementoweb/repositories) since May 2023. The only sign of life I can find is that the [Memento Web Twitter account](https://twitter.com/mementoweb) reposted something on 25 Jun 2025. Searching the web for any news of a shut down yields no results.
It seems like the project is gone. How do we determine when to update this article, and how do we properly say that something has ghosted? TrivialJim (talk) 21:55, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- Noticed it too, but like you, I couldn't find any sources about it. I'd say an update in careful wordings, along the lines of "As of July 2025, it appears the project has been discontinued" could be worth adding. However, without any sources that would probably be considered original research (?)
- As for when to update, we could wait until September to see if the domain registration is renewed. If it is not, then it's safe to say the project is dead. MichielN (talk) 10:25, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Well, it's more or less official now, although it may not be a definitive end yet. But the site is partly back online, with a header stating: "We are considering major changes to the service, up to and including shutting it down, and are interested in hearing more about how you use it. To that end, we would appreciate your (anonymous) response to this survey." Judging from a 2025-05-17 snapshot on archive.today that header was already there two months ago. Let's see how it turns out. MichielN (talk) 14:54, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
