[edit]I copied over from my sandbox User:NRodbruin/Friendship the Evolutionary Approaches, Friendship jealousy, and Non-human friendship sections. The non-human friendship section was formally titled Interspecies but I think Non-human friendship fits better. Added paragraph into the Childhood section, didnt make any changes to existing sentences. Added a paragraph on friendship preferences after first sentence in the forming and maintaining subsection. Move discussion in progress
[edit]There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Friend (disambiguation) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 23:14, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
Lead image
[edit]JDiala Let's not edit war over the lead image. As it is, the photograph is poorly lit and seems to be self-promotional. Is there some universal image, likely in art, of friendship that would be amenable to all? ~ HAL333 10:55, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
- Kind of just a passerby in this kerfuffle, but here are some quick artsy suggestions:
- File:Best friends (1934), by Romualdo Locatelli.jpg
- File:El cuentito.jpg
- File:BEST FRIENDS 215l19115.jpg
- File:Childhood friends (1881), by Gaetano Chierici.jpg (includes friendship between humans, as well as humans and animals.)
- File:「友情 (少女世界)」 須藤しげる (1930年).jpg
- File:Tier Freund Schaft (Amistad animal). Paul Klee.jpg (I don't really think this is a good suggestion, but I thought it was cute!)
- File:Otto Jung Doppelporträt Elisabeth Susanne Hormann und Emma Gutersohn.jpg
- There may be better, but not properly categorized files available. These were just the ones that stuck out for me in the category (and subcategories) of Commons:Category:Friendship in art. A lot of the available paintings with humans showcase white people or women in friendship, but again, maybe there are uncategorized files (or non-uploaded public domain art) that may be more inclusive, as well. - I would personally prefer something like File:Human–canine friendship - girl hugging her dog tightly at golden hour in Laos.jpg. I agree that the current photo is pretty meh. But I've changed it before and people seem to want to keep it for no particular reason. GMGtalk 12:59, 6 May 2025 (UTC)

Childhood Friends
Although I do like Childhood Friends as it shows both human and animal friendship, I think Best Friends is the best option here. It's just a little more direct and 'efficient' in communicating friendship. ~ HAL333 13:26, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
- Comment - The article gained traction due to a post on Twitter, featuring the former lead image. [1]. Yoshiman6464 ♫🥚 13:30, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
- Well that's a terrible quality picture. GMGtalk 13:49, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
- Description also feels un-encyclopedic with a sentence like "A reminder that friendship transcends language, race, and nationality". Lighting is also poor as others have mentioned Dingers5Days (talk) 17:27, 6 May 2025 (UTC)

- The newly added series of images is not an improvement and needs to be reverted by someone. They are both excessive and size and not immediately clear in subject. ~ HAL333 18:47, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
- It also looks really weird on mobile Mayouhm (talk) 18:57, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
- I think Best Friends would be good as the lead image. KnowDeath (talk) 12:43, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
""Friendliness" redirects here; not to be confused with Friendliness (album)."
[edit]Should this really be at the top of the page. It almost feels like free advertising for this album. Friends the TV show is one of the most famous TV shows in history, yet there is no referral to that (nor should there be). 159.190.240.176 (talk) 07:27, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- Friends the show isn't mentioned in the hatnote because "friends" doesn't redirect here — it links straight to the TV show. Instead, this article is mentioned at the top of that page. If "friends" did redirect here, it would certainly be in the hatnote. Loytra✨ 16:40, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
Painting
[edit]Why do we need a painting on the top? WikiGrower1 (talk) 23:48, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
- there are better pictures in the Wikipedia commons WikiGrower1 (talk) 23:48, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
- If nothing else, it keeps people from coming here every day and adding their personal photo. GMGtalk 00:38, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
- But I found some picture from Flickr and uploaded it to the commons WikiGrower1 (talk) 19:47, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
- Well, it's a fairly common issue on fairly common articles. Everybody thinks the picture of their dog should be the picture for the article on dogs. It's not a bad impulse. Lots of people start out contributing in ways that are familiar, their car, their pet, their hometown, their school. But it's not necessarily the best way to go about constructing a stable article that is supposed to be relevant to all of humanity. GMGtalk 20:05, 21 November 2025 (UTC)

- I think paintings and art are great ways to showcase a topic as vague as this! We had a short discussion regarding the painting here, if you're curious. EdoAug (talk) 01:33, 22 November 2025 (UTC)
- Here is my concern. People can naturally read social cues because we see people faces and can know whether they are friends. (eg. Seeing people smile means they are happy. when they are close, they are likely). Although the painting clearly shows they are friends, it might look realistic when it is in a photo. The mouth would likely be easier to see than in a painting. WikiGrower1 (talk) 02:56, 22 November 2025 (UTC)
- Some people cover their faces in public. Some find it difficult or impossible to read facial expressions. Some have facial abnormalities, poor/no dental care and try to hide a smile. Some may find solace in a friend in hard times when they're definitely not smiling at all. Most non-human animals can't smile in a way we would recognize. Some humans may smile out of embarrassment or to conceal their true feelings.
- We're writing for a global audience. What may seem most relevant to you may be completely different to someone else. There is never going to be a perfect picture to illustrate the range of experience. GMGtalk 09:37, 22 November 2025 (UTC)
- I notice that none of the images in this article have more than two people in them. That suggests that friendship doesn't happen in groups, which is false. If we were going to add more photos to this article, perhaps illustrating the concept of a group of friends would be appropriate. WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:32, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
