Talk:Cereatae Marianae

Proposed deletion: source review

[edit]

Psychastes proposed deleting this article because the author was suspected of generating other articles using AI and fictitious sources. I am deprodding it after reviewing it for the following reasons:

None of the sources cited in this article are fictitious. The article in the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography largely agrees with the contents of this article, though it is under "Cereatae" and not "Cereatae Marianae", as cited (though it does suggest that the municipium was called that in later times). Pliny mentions the inhabitants of a colony here as the Cereatini Mariani, though without giving the name of the town (but from their name, that can be safely inferred). I did not check the Barrington Atlas because it's a recent source and often criticized for its use in Wikipedia, but if I recall the criticism is that it doesn't (or often doesn't) provide any details besides the name of a place and its location. Cited alongside the other sources, that should be fine.

I also was unable to verify the Ashby citations, but the reason for this is probably that I could not identify or locate the correct part: The Classical Topography of the Latin Campagna was published in several separate parts (with some subparts) over the course of several years, and it certainly should include this place. I'm not sure whether the correct part is something I can access online, but I think that with more time the correct part can be located and the citation amended to make it easier to verify.

While I have no means of determining whether AI was used in writing this article, nothing in it appears suspicious or dubious, and it is in agreement with the sources that I checked; none of the sources are fictitious. If this article needs cleanup, that's something that can be done in the ordinary course of editing. There is no reason to delete it. P Aculeius (talk) 14:34, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
