[edit]Merged with duplicate article (my bad) Macina Empire today. I've kept Davidson's info on the empire's ending date, capital, and defeat by Umar Tall as I found confirmation of them at: 1 and [membres.lycos.fr/anthropa/A.Mayor.html 2]. --Dvyost 7 July 2005 16:18 (UTC)
Peul & Fula
[edit]I've changed Peul, which is French, to Fula. No problem with French en français, but it confuses readers in English to have different terms for the same group. If we use a term from another language the natural choice would be to use the Fulfulde/Pulaar term, Fulɓe. A12n 22:37, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
- That was likely my bad, as I com at this from French history, and so am stuck on Francophone names and spellings.T L Miles (talk) 22:16, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Macina
[edit]Removed from the opening paragraph the reference to Macina, which in its narrower sense is part of the larger Inland Niger Delta. I believe that the traditional Fula area of Maasina was roughly centered on today's Macina Cercle, but in any event is on the western side of the IND, and was an integral part of what we now call the Massina Empire.--A12n (talk) 02:57, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Possible flag?
[edit]
I’ve been seeing this flag floating around, and I’ve been wondering if it’s accurate or not. TJ Kreen (talk) 02:06, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

Massina Empire → Caliphate of Hamdullahi – WP:COMMONNAME per ngrams. On Google Scholar, "Massina Empire" gets 40 hits, "Caliphate of Hamdullahi" gets 150 hits. Kowal2701 (talk) 20:04, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- No objection, as long as we don't suppress the former. (This might be citogenesis.) Srnec (talk) 20:14, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, happy to use Massina throughout the article, we only mention the city Macina once so it’s less ambiguous. It’s a bit of a strange name for the polity given its capital wasn’t Macina, but there are a few sources who used it pre wikipedia Kowal2701 (talk) 20:47, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- The region of the inland or Inner Niger Delta of Mali itself was/is called Macina or Massina. Some Fulas also call it Fuuta Macina (In the same like as Fuuta Jallon and Fuuta Toro in G/Conakry & G/Bissau and Senegal/Mauritania respectively)... Not sure if the article should be moved to Caliphate of Hamdallahi. There are example of other Fula Jihad states carying the names of regions instead of their capitals.. One example is Imamate of Futa Jallon (Not Imamate of Timbo or Fugumba) and the similarly named Imamate of Futa Toro (Not Imamate of Worefunde).
- Other fula political entities such as Adamawa/Fombina, Bundu (state) and Tekrur are also all regions... I don't think political entities have to be names after their capitals. Oramfe (talk) Oramfe (talk) 05:02, 19 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, I didn’t know that. I think we’d still have to go with the common name? Kowal2701 (talk) 10:20, 19 July 2025 (UTC)
