First usage
[edit]The entire history of usage claims that "Cafeteria Christianity" first appeared in print in the 1990s, following use of the related Cathiolic tern in the 1980s... but,
- Here is a sermon being given on "Cafeteria Christianity" in 1939
- Another sermon on the same topic from 1918! (We cannot say for certainty that these sermons were on the same topic being discussed here, but we certainly cannot assume they were not. And I find similar listings from 1947, 1950)
- in 1949, "the cafeteria type of Christianity" is clearly being used to depict a negative thing. * 1950 reference uses the term to depict Christians who want the most for the least
- 1951 sermon "Cafeteria Christianity -- whatever we pick -- for that we have to pay"
- [https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-minneapolis-star-cafeteria-type-chri/171005937/ And here, in 1962, a headline of 'Cafeteria-type Christianity' being used for "take what they want and leave what they don't like", very clearly the meaning we are using here.
I'm going to save myself providing links to the sermons of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, but they are indeed to be found. --Nat Gertler (talk) 17:43, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- I've gone ahead and deleted the whole section, as none of its claims were sourced, nor were any true. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 17:47, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
