Talk:Arrest and detention of Palestinian minors by Israel

Merge proposal

[edit]

Merge Detention of minors in Israel into Palestinians in Israeli custody. The current version has major WP:NPOV issues, including not explaining why the minors have been detained. Nehushtani (talk) 13:56, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose– This topic warrants its own dedicated article. The arrest and detention of Palestinian minors involve specific legal standards and international concerns, which are thoroughly addressed by organizations such as UNICEF, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, B’Tselem, and others. While the broader in Israeli Custody page covers all detainees, this article focuses specifically on children—a distinct issue under international law and human rights reporting. Merging the two would dilute this focus and reduce clarity. WP:NPOV concerns can be addressed through various methods; merging the articles is not the only solution. The reason for the arrest is stated at the beginning of the article as follows: "Palestinian minors are typically charged with throwing stones..."Haziran11 (talk) 06:30, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support merge (or delete). Per WP:MERGE and WP:POVFORK, the topic does not demonstrate independent WP:NOTABILITY beyond what can be summarized in two other articles we already have: Palestinians in Israeli custody and the much more balanced (at least in vision and scope) Children in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. As written, the new article duplicates coverage already handled in those pages and presents a WP:NPOV / WP:UNDUE imbalance (including the omission of reliably sourced material on instances of minors' involvement in violence and terrorism while foregrounding criticism), which is better corrected by integrating balanced content into the better contextualized parents. Consolidation will also reduce WP:COATRACK risks and improve verifiability and context. Summing it up, I recommend merging reliably sourced, neutral material to the two parent articles and redirecting this title. Rafi Chazon (talk) 07:10, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This article should not be merged with another article because the target article, in Israeli Custody, is approximately 6,000 words long. According to WP:Article Size, merging lengthy content can result in an excessively large and unwieldy article. Furthermore, the information provided by DCIP regarding the detention and conditions of Palestinian children contains specific and well-documented aspects. Maintaining a separate article allows for detailed coverage and the inclusion of independent sources. Therefore, it is more appropriate to keep this article separate. WP:AS does not say that articles cannot be be longer than 6,000 words. The current article is a WP:POVFORK, and length alone does not justify keeping it seperate. Nehushtani (talk) 12:07, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The arrest and detention of Palestinian minors by Israel is a significant subtopic extensively covered by independent sources such as UNICEF, B’Tselem, DCIP, and UN reports. The main article, “Palestinians in Israeli Custody,” already exceeds 5,000 words, so including full details about minors would make it excessively long (WP:AS). According to WP:SUMMARYSTYLE and WP:SPINOUT, the main article can provide a summary of this topic with a link to a dedicated article. This approach ensures comprehensive coverage without creating a POVFORK, as the focus is on a distinct legal and demographic subtopic. Haziran11 (talk) 13:11, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Opppose if the article currently has problems then it can be fixed later, this is not a strong enough reason to have it merged. I think Haziran11 is correct about concerns over article size, and that summary style and spinout support this. If there is material on why Palestinian minors have been arrested or detained by Israel, then it can be added to this article. If there isn't any material on this, synthesis need not occur, and this article isn't a POVFORK. While article size doesn't directly say that the maximum is 6,000, this is usually around the maximum for focused topics such as the detention of Palestinians by Israel, and a focus on a specific demographic of Palestinians, that being the youth, is tangentially related enough for it to be spun out.
