R. Scott Gemmill

R. Scott Gemmill is a Canadian writer and producer born in Orangeville, Ontario and raised in Fort Erie, Ontario. He wrote and produced for JAG and ER.[1] Starting in its eighth season, he was the showrunner of NCIS: Los Angeles.[2] Gemmill created, showran, and executive produced the 2025 medical drama The Pitt.[3]
Career
[edit]Gemmill started as a story editor on Friday the 13th: The Series in 1989 and also wrote for the show.[1] He also wrote on Tropical Heat and Side Effects.[1]
Gemmill worked on JAG as an executive story editor and writer.[4] He joined the crew in the first season and remained until the fourth season,[5] writing a total of 18 episodes.[6] After two years of writing for the show, he became a producer.[1] In 1999, he was nominated for a Humanitas Prize in the 60-minute category for his work on the JAG episode "Angels 30".[7]
He joined the crew of ER in its sixth season as a supervising producer and writer,[6] and eventually became an executive producer for the show.[3] The show was twice nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Drama Series for the sixth and seventh seasons.[8] He wrote for the series until the thirteenth season, a total of thirty-two episodes.[6] In 2008, he and David Zabel won a Humanitas Prize in the drama teleplay category for their work on the ER season 12 episode "There Are No Angels Here".[9]
He went on to work on the drama series Smith as an executive producer.[6] After the cancellation of Smith, he worked as a writer and executive producer on Women's Murder Club.[6] When that series was also cancelled, he took a position as a consulting producer and writer on The Unit.[6] After that program ended, he became a writer and executive producer on the fall 2009 series NCIS: Los Angeles, and became its showrunner in its eighth season.[2][3]
Gemmill is the creator and showrunner of the HBO Max series The Pitt and also serves as a writer and executive producer.[3] The show won the 2025 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series.[10]
