Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen (born May 17, 1941) is a Danish medicinal chemist who studies the glutamatergic, GABAergic, and cholinergic neurotransmitter systems and drugs acting on these systems.[2][3][4][5][6][1] He is known for discovering and developing the AMPA receptor agonist AMPA and the Amanita muscaria- or muscimol-derived GABAA receptor agonist THIP (gaboxadol), among many other scientific contributions.[3][2][4][5][6] Some other notable drugs he has developed include the GABAA receptor agonist isoguvacine and the GABA reuptake inhibitors nipecotic acid and guvacine (which led to the subsequent independent development of tiagabine).[6] Krogsgaard-Larsen has published more than 400 scientific papers and has edited 8 books.[1] He is considered to be a giant in the field of medicinal chemistry and to be the most impactful Danish medicinal chemist.[2] An autobiography was published for Krogsgaard-Larsen in 2011.[2]

[Povl] Krogsgaard-Larsen was born on the island of Mors, Denmark in 1941. He graduated from the Royal Danish School of Pharmacy, Copenhagen, in 1967. The Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees were acquired at the Royal Danish School of Pharmacy in 1970 and 1980, respectively. He was appointed research professor in 1986 and full professor in 1991 in medicinal chemistry at this school. He obtained honorary doctor degrees from Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg, France, in 1992 and from Uppsala University, Sweden, in 2000. He has received a large number of research awards and prizes, including The H.C. Ørsted Award (1967), The Ole Rømer Research Award (1983), The Lundbeck Foundation Prize (1989), The Paul Ehrlich Prize, France (1989), and The W. Th. Nauta Award, The Netherlands (1996). He is the European Editor of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, and has since 2001 been the Rector at The Royal Danish School of Pharmacy. He is a member of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, The Danish Academy of Natural Sciences, and The Danish Academy of Technical Sciences and is a member of the boards of The Carlsberg Foundation and The Alfred Benzon Foundation. He is Chairman of the Board of the Carlsberg Laboratory and the graduate school, Drug Research Academy. He has been director of the research centers PharmaBiotec (1987–1999) and NeuroScience PharmaBiotec (1997–2001). He has been doing pioneering research in design of specific ligands for GABA and glutamate receptors and transport mechanisms and has designed and developed series of specific muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholine receptor ligands. He is author and co-author of 400 research papers and review articles, and he has edited 8 books. The textbook "Drug Design and Discovery" 3rd Edition (Eds. P. Krogsgaard-Larsen, Ulf Madsen and Tommy Liljefors) was published in June 2002.
