Phoenixes (French: Phénix) is a Quebec drama film directed and written by Jonathan Beaulieu-Cyr, starring Maxime Genois, Evelyne Brochu and Aksel Leblanc.[1]
This is Jonathan Beaulieu-Cyr's first feature film as an individual, having co-directed the docu-drama Mad Dog Labine (2018) with Renaud Lessard.
The film had its world premiere at the Festival de Cinéma de la ville de Québec (FCVQ) on September 13, 2024, where it won a Special Mention from the Jury for Best First Fiction Feature.[2]
Phénix won the Prix Gilles-Carle at Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma (RVQC) in February 2025, as well as the Best Director and Best Cinematography awards at the Whistler Film Festival in December 2024.[3][4]
The film will be released in Quebec on August 22, 2025.[5]
Synopsis
[edit]In the mid-2000s, Joël Girard, a charismatic and endearing soldier, is about to be deployed to Afghanistan. His wife and son, Michelle and Jacob, must learn to live with this new reality: this new mission comes with real risk. In an effort to get closer to Jacob, Joël starts coaching his soccer team, the Phoenixes. Despite his efforts, a rift will grow between him and his son.
Phoenixes is an autobiographical work that plunges us headfirst into the reality of military families. Through an intimate and luminous drama, the director invites us to revisit a troubled period of Canadian history.[6]
Production
[edit]Jonathan Beaulieu-Cyr wrote the screenplay based in part on his own experiences as the son of a soldier who fought in Afghanistan.[7]
The film was shot in fall 2023, in and around Quebec City.[8]
