An oral food challenge is a method for determining if a person has a specific food allergy. It involves giving increasing amounts of a food and watching to see if an allergic reaction occurs. They are potentially dangerous.[1]: 15 oral food challenge
Lemon-induced allergic rhinosinusitis Some people may tolerate small amounts of lemon without problems, but larger amounts can cause allergic rhinosinusitis. In such cases, symptoms remain localized, mainly involving the nose and paranasal sinuses, and there are no systemic manifestations. In contrast, in the case of certain foods, such as peanuts, even very small amounts can provoke a severe allergic reaction of the anaphylactic type.
Therefore, strict precautions are necessary during an oral food challenge. Only very small amounts of the suspect food should be administered, and the procedure should be performed under specialized medical supervision in a hospital equipped with emergency facilities capable of managing potential anaphylactic shock.
