PT Mediatama Televisi, (formerly as Nexmedia)[1] operating under the trademark Nex Parabola, is an Indonesian subscription satellite television service provider from Indonesia founded by Dian Khrisna Mukti owned by Elang Mahkota Teknologi[2] and Kompas Gramedia.[3]

History

Nexmedia

Nex Parabola originated from Nexmedia,was founded by Dian Khrisna Mukti,[4][5][6] which was initially a provider of terrestrial television subscription services in Greater Jakarta. The company, with the slogan “Simply Entertaining” began operations and offering its products on November 23, 2011,[7] and is owned by the Elang Mahkota Teknologi (Emtek) and Kompas Gramedia (KG). Nexmedia is unique because, unlike other pay TV services that mostly use satellite dishes and cables, this subscription television service chooses to use the DVB-T2 terrestrial digital television method that we are familiar with. This means its use is similar to a digital television set-top box, where the signal is transmitted and captured by an antenna, and to enjoy it, it can be connected to a television. The difference from regular digital television is the frequency range, where Nexmedia operates in the 290.5-320.5 VHF range (digital television is generally on UHF channels).[8][9] and the signal is scrambled, requiring a special decoder/STB to remove the scrambling.[10] This is because Nexmedia also broadcasts foreign channels such as CNN, Fox Movies, beTV and others, some of which hold certain broadcasting rights (such as sports).

Since its launch until July 2012, Nexmedia has attracted 20,000 subscribers.[11][12] by offering prices that are claimed to be affordable.[13] Nexmedia has a maximum of 53 channels and has introduced features such as NexSat Combo in collaboration with Indosat Ooredoo.[14][15] Nexmedia services (along with Nexdrive)[16] were discontinued as of September 1, 2019, with the official reason being Emtek's business shift toward focusing on its over-the-top service, Vidio Premier[17], in line with changing consumer preferences.[18][19] However, there are rumors that Nexmedia was actually unable to pay the VHF frequency usage fees and therefore had to cease operations.[20] Other sources also mention that Nexmedia's frequency usage rights were revoked by the government because its license had expired and the frequency was planned to be used for other purposes.[21]

Nex Parabola

Not long after, Nex Parabola appeared on September 16, 2019, which we can consider as the “successor” to Nexmedia because it has a very similar logo. Nex Parabola was founded after Emtek Group established a partnership with Matrix, a satellite television decoder manufacturer.[22][23] The Nex Parabola system is not much different from regular satellite television, using a satellite dish and DVB-S2 decoder, a receiver that can capture C-Band and Ku-Band signals, with its main product being broadcasting rights for a number of sports.[24] That is why, unlike Nexmedia, Nex Parabola can be received nationwide..

Broadcasting rights

Nexmedia first became the holder of the broadcasting rights for the Champions League, Europa League, and Super Cup from the 2012–13 to 2014–15 seasons,[25] 2016–17 to 2017–18 seasons together with beIN Sports, 2019–20 to 2023–24 seasons,[26][27] alongside its national free-to-air channel SCTV (excluding the 2015–16 and 2018–19 seasons for SCTV, as it was only broadcast on RCTI).

During the first three cycles (until 2014–15), it was broadcast exclusively.[28]

Then, for the second three cycles (until 2017–18), it was broadcast through a license from the beIN Sports channel, which holds the broadcasting rights for three Southeast Asian countries that also received a share after Indonesia (Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand), plus Australia and New Zealand. [29]

Then, for the third three cycles (until 2020–21), it was broadcast through a license from the TSB channel owned by Futbal Momentum Asia (FMA) as the new distributor, replacing beIN Sports, whose contract had expired. Unlike the previous two cycles, TSB on Nexmedia only began broadcasting in November 2018 and did not include the broadcasting rights for the 2018 UEFA Super Cup.[30] Entering the 2019–20 season (before and after changing its name to pay TV), Surya Citra Media once again became the official broadcaster of the three UEFA club competitions for the second time (third overall). but SCM became the main distributor for two seasons to replace FMA, which was experiencing a financial crisis, so that RCTI was also unable to continue broadcasting the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League and only broadcast the 2018-19 season on RCTI and SCM (through the Champions TV channel) also redistributed the broadcasting rights through two pay TV stations outside the SCM group, namely UseeTV and First Media to replace K -Vision.[31]

Premier League

Nexmedia first became the holder of the Premier League broadcasting rights starting in the 2013–14 season.[32]

In the first three cycles (until 2015–16) and the second cycle (until 2018–19), it was broadcast through a license from the beIN Sports channel and also aired on two national FTA channels, namely SCTV and Indosiar.[33] However, the second cycle differed in that the league was only broadcast on beIN Sports channels because the cooperation contracts between SCTV and Indosiar with beIN Sports had expired and were replaced by their rival national FTA channels, namely RCTI and MNCTV from MNC Media.[34]

In the third cycle (until 2021–22/after changing its name to pay TV), it was broadcast through a multi-platform service license owned by GDP Ventures (a subsidiary of Djarum) Mola TV, but only began airing in week 30 to replace the public TV station TVRI, which only broadcast 56 matches (weeks 1 to 29) for the 2019–20 season, instead of the planned 76 matches per season until 2021–22, due to TVRI's many constraints, such as a busy broadcast schedule (as TVRI also holds many broadcasting rights for domestic and international sports competitions/tournaments), the cost per match, internal controversies, and other obstacles. Starting in the 2020–21 season, NET. will replace TVRI as the Premier League's broadcasting rights partner to broadcast Premier League matches for the 2020–21 season only, together with Mola TV's license, due to TVRI's financial crisis related to broadcasting rights. Starting in the 2021–22 season, SCTV will replace NET. to broadcast the 2021-22 Premier League season due to NET. being sued for bankruptcy due to debt in 2020-21.[35][36][37][38]

Then, in the fourth cycle (until 2024–25), it will be broadcast live and exclusively (via Champions TV, SCTV's FTA TV channel, and Moji's digital TV channel) after Emtek acquired the broadcasting rights and replaced Mola TV.[39]

Next, in the fifth cycle (until 2027–28), it will once again be broadcast live and exclusively (via Champions TV, SCTV's FTA TV channel, and Moji's digital TV channel). [40][41]

FIFA World Cup

For the first time, Nex Parabola has secured the broadcasting rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar will be broadcast on Champions TV, Vidio, SCTV, Kompas TV Indosiar, Moji, and Mentari TV.

Satellite

Nex Parabola is broadcast via the Palapa D (C-Band) and SES 9 (Ku-Band) satellites. Since June 1, 2020, Nex Parabola has also been broadcast via the Telkom-4 (C-Band) satellite.[42] Starting August 1, 2020, Nex Parabola will broadcast entirely on the Telkom-4 (C-Band) and SES 9 (Ku-Band) satellites.[43]
