Mário Gomes (born 25 February 1957) is a Portuguese professional basketball coach and current head coach of the Portugal national team. He is recognized for guiding Portugal to its first-ever advancement to the knockout stage (Round of 16) at EuroBasket 2025.
Club coaching career
[edit]Gomes began his coaching career in Portuguese club basketball. He started with Algés BC and had his most notable time lather with Benfica, where he served on the coaching staff during the club's period of domestic dominance in the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol.[1]
He later took charge of Barreirense Basket, one of Portugal's most traditional clubs, where he focused on developing young domestic players and implementing a structured defensive system.[2]
National team coaching career
[edit]In January 2017, the Portuguese Basketball Federation appointed Gomes as head coach of the men's senior national team and retained him as National Technical Director.[3]
At EuroBasket 2025, Portugal achieved historic wins over the Czech Republic and Estonia.[4] He attributed their success to the team's collective spirit.[5] Under his leadership, Portugal advanced to the Round of 16 at EuroBasket 2025-a historic milestone.[6]
