Koothattukulam is a municipality of Kerala state, India[3] in the Ernakulam district. It is 32 km (19.9 mi) south of the district headquarters in Thrikkakara and about 156 km (96.9 mi) north of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. As per the 2011 Indian census, Koothattukulam has a population of 17,253 people, and a population density of 755/km2 (1,960/sq mi). It is at the junction of Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Idukki districts, in the foothills of the Western Ghats and is part of the Keezhmalanad region.
The town comprises five main localities: Koothattukulam, Vadakara, Paittakulam, Kizhakombu and Edayar.[citation needed]
