Jose Pablo Cantillo

Jose Pablo Cantillo, known as Joey Cantillo, is an American actor, writer, director, and producer of Costa Rican descent in his early 40s. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has appeared in numerous major film and television productions, including Crank (2006), Sons of Anarchy (2008–2014), The Walking Dead (2012–2013), Elysium (2013), Chappie (2015), Mayor of Kingstown (2021–present), and Ambulance (2022). Early life and education Cantillo was born in Marshfield, Wisconsin, and raised in Terre Haute, Indiana, by his Costa Rican parents, Roberto Cantillo and Rita Bolaños. He attended Terre Haute South Vigo High School, where he was a standout tennis player for four years, helping lead the Braves to a state runner-up finish in 1996. He graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 2001 from the Kelley School of Business Honors program. After taking drama classes at IU, Cantillo moved to New York City to pursue acting, training at the Atlantic Theater Company.

Career

Cantillo relocated to Los Angeles in late 2003 and quickly began landing guest roles on television. His breakout came with the action film Crank (2006), in which he played the villain Ricky Verona opposite Jason Statham; he reprised the role in Crank: High Voltage (2009). That same year, he appeared in the thriller Disturbia alongside Shia LaBeouf.

On television, Cantillo earned recognition for his recurring role as 'Hector Salazar', the volatile leader of a rival motorcycle gang, on the FX series Sons of Anarchy (2008–2014). He later joined the cast of AMC's The Walking Dead as 'Caesar Martinez', the bat-wielding enforcer for the 'Governor'.

Cantillo has collaborated with acclaimed directors including Jonathan Demme (The Manchurian Candidate, 2004), David Mamet, and Neill Blomkamp, who cast him in both Elysium (2013) and Chappie (2015). His extensive television credits include Standoff, Constantine, Taken, El Chicano, NCIS, S.W.A.T., The Rookie, Magnum P.I., Will Trent, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Mayor of Kingstown.

In addition to acting, Cantillo works as a writer, and producer, having established his own production company.

Personal life

When he's not on set, Cantillo can be found on the sidelines coaching his kids' youth sports teams, twirling his wife Kristi across the dance floor to Latin music, or playing endless games of fetch with his beloved dogs. The family calls Los Angeles home.
