The ITTF Mixed Team World Cup is a premier mixed-team table tennis tournament organized by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). It is considered one of the three major world table tennis events, alongside the World Table Tennis Championships and the Table Tennis World Cup. The inaugural event was held in December 2023 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, and it has been confirmed that Chengdu will host the tournament for five consecutive years (2023–2027).[1]

History

[edit]

Inauguration

[edit]

On August 26, 2023, the ITTF announced the creation of a new event, the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup.[2] Aiming to enhance the appeal of table tennis, promote teamwork, and advance gender equality, the ITTF decided to establish this mixed-team competition. This event innovatively combines male and female players within the same team, designed to showcase the inclusivity and team spirit of table tennis. The successful format and positive reception have provided valuable practical foundation for the inclusion of mixed team table tennis in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.[3]

The tournament features a dedicated championship trophy, known as the "Guoliang Sorlin Cup". It was crafted by Zhu Bingren, a Chinese Master of Arts and crafts and inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage of copper carving. The golden sphere at the top of the trophy symbolizes the refined and forging-ahead spirit of table tennis. The "cloud-water base" supporting the top represents the uplifting and forward-driving sports spirit. The streamlined lines on both sides of the trophy signify the unity, progress, and friendship in sports between East and West. The square base represents the solid foundation of table tennis.[4]
