Gibberula diadema is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk, in the family Cystiscidae.[2]

Description

[edit]

The shell is minute, solid, and ovate to biconic in shape. It features a smooth, polished surface with a low spire and a large, inflated body whorl that comprises most of the shell's volume. The aperture is narrow and elongate, running the full length of the shell, and is surrounded by a thickened, reflected outer lip. The shell color is typically translucent white or cream, often with patterns of opaque white blotches or spiral bands. The specific epithet "diadema" (Latin for crown or diadem) likely refers to the shell's ornate appearance. The length of the shell attains 2.2 mm.

Habitat and Ecology

As a member of the family Cystiscidae, this species is a carnivorous predator. Cystiscids are known to feed on tiny marine invertebrates such as foraminiferans and meiofaunal worms. Their small size allows them to inhabit complex microhabitats like coral rubble, algal turf, and sand substrates.

Taxonomy

This species was first described by M. Pin and F. Boyer in 1995. It belongs to the genus Gibberula, which comprises numerous very small predatory gastropods found in tropical and temperate seas worldwide.

Distribution

[edit]

This species is endemic to the eastern central Atlantic Ocean. This marine species occurs off Senegal. It is found in shallow subtidal waters, though the exact depth range and microhabitat are not well-documented.
