Firmesk Hafez is the Kurdish pop singer born in Mahabad/East Kurdistan-(Iran). Since her childhood, she had a desire to become a singer.
Early life
[edit]At the age of 19, she founded a girls band with four fellow musicians, which was an absolute taboo and only possible under conspiratorial conditions in the Islamic Republic of Iran. When the authorities learned about one of their unofficial performances, the band was immediately banned and dissolved.[1]
First album
[edit]Firmesk continued to hold concerts in secret for her growing fan base, even in the capital, Tehran. She even produced a complete Albume in Iran, collaborating with friends and facing extremely difficult circumstances, all in secrecy. The Album, titled „Mang“ (Moon), could only be released in 2011, after Firmesk left Iran and settled in Sulaymaniyah, the largest city in the Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq.[1] With the support of the local Ministry of Culture, she was able to publish an initial edition of ten thousand copies, which were quickly pirated and spread in large quantities. The song „Dardi Darun“ has become legendary among the Kurds, whether in their homeland or in diaspora.[1]
Today
[edit]Her self-produced music videos on YouTube further contributed to making her one of the most prominent representatives of modern Kurdish pop music today. Firmesk primarily sets lyrics of contemporary Kurdish poetry and Kurdish literature to music/song, this includes her album titled „Arazui Frin,“ which she completed in the Federal Republic of Germany, where she has been living since 2015. Since today continues to produce music and inspire their Kurdish audience.[1]
