Policy advocacy

[edit]

Dr. Fernandes has worked in multiple humanitarian emergencies such as Typhoon Haiyaan in the Philippines and also in Cyclone Fani, Kerala Floods etc providing medical relief, care and post disaster epidemiological interventions.[16][17] He has advocated for a ban on doctor's white coats to prevent hospital acquired infections[18] and also advocated to regulate work hours of resident doctors to reduce preventable deaths,[19] and requested the Health Secretary to Government of India to remove the mandatory retirement age for doctors to plug shortages.[20] To combat rising heart attacks among population groups, he advised people to keep 300mg aspirin in their pockets always and to take the pill when they develop severe chest pain.[21][22][23] In 2017, he spoke at the United Nations Regional Hub in Bangkok on how South–South cooperation at the ASEAN level can create a new world order in strengthening international development.[24][25] Further, he was engaged by the US Government for a high-level deliberation on public health and climate crisis in the Indo-Pacific Region.[26] He has addressed various public health issues such as mental health,[27] food security[28] climate goals[29] through UNFCCC COP[30] & other forums.

Contributions to public health

[edit]

Fernandes demonstrated proof of concept to end malnutrition in India through a pilot project in Yelburga, Karnataka.[31] He co-founded Mission ICU,[32] a citizen-driven initiative under CHD Group. Mission ICU has supported over 23 District Hospitals of India with over 200 plus ICU beds and ventilators, thereby building surge capacity in government hospitals.[33] Fernandes wrote to the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court and to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to ensure a full ban on firecrackers in the state with silent hours to mark the commitment to climate justice.[34]

Dr. Fernandes was instrumental to implement seat belt policy for road safety in the city of Mangalore in the year 2015.[35]
